I would like to know what do you all feel about trims, and how often do you think they should be done? I`m asking because I`ve always been told that you must always keep your hair trimmed, etc. But I came across a lady on a website who says that she never trims her hair and yet her hair is inching past bra strap length. When I was younger, I never got trims and my hair was longer then. Which do you all think is better for growing hair long, trims or no trims?

My theory....I only trim my hair about every 6 months and only about 1/4 inch. I do not get splits and my hair seems in pretty good shape. I think that the more trims you get then the longer it will take to reach a long hair goal. Therefore, if your hair doesn`t seem to need trimmed then don`t trim it.

I suggest that you never get a trim unless it really looks like you need it. If there are split ends and breakage, then it might be a good idea.
Let me say something. While growing out my hair, I never got it trimmed. It was shoulder length then, and now 3 years later, it is at my tailbone. :) and it`s still growing.
I do agree that it will take longer to reach your hair goal. (AND I`M NOT AN EXPERT!!!) :p:p:p

Does anyone know how to properly give a trim to your own hair? I`m sick of the hairdressers. I wanna be able to do it on my own hair.

My theory is that hair is not meant to be cut in any way, ever.
A natural un-cut hair will be taper at it`s end to a fine point. This type of hair does not tend to split unless badly cared for. I have checked out my long-haired friends and family and the hair that is un-cut is stable. The hair that has been blunt cut has its cortex exposed and is more liable to respond to environmental stress by splitting. Trimming is encourage to give hair an even shape. If left to it`s own devices, hair will fall into a balanced shape which is unlike the way people trim it, but is quite beautiful.
Just my thoughts......oh and despite the science, I am convinced my hair is ALIVE.

Thanks everyone.
Uzma, I am considering what you said. It seems that the more I get my hair trimmed (she chops off an inch), the more that I have to get trimmed off the next time I get a trim (8 weeks).
For a while, I think that I am going to give up trimming completely. It has been 7 weeks since my last one. For about 6 months, I may go completely without a trim to observe what happens. I am going to continue taking care of my hair though. I guess after the six months are up, I`ll give myself a very moderate trim.

i think the idea of not trimming the hair unless it really is necessary is a good idea! a couple of years ago i never trimmed my hair because it never got split ends and it was beautiful! then, i heard about trimming your hair regularly so i tried it and it made everything worse. My most important thing to tell everyone is that if you are going to trim your hair then make sure it is with sharp shears made for hair...i let my mom trim my hair with normal paper scissors that we had been using around the house for a couple years before- AAHH! splitsville!:) right now i am trimming my hair a fourth of an inch every three months or so until the damaged stuff grows out (from health problems) and then i`ll let my hair determine what it needs.

Hi Karonica,
When I started to let my hair really grow longer my hair was 15 inches. That is 8 years ago now and my hair is 41 inches long now. The girls I now with beautiful long hair did the same as I did. Especially in the beginning I got a few good trims every half year and just let it grow. I wouldn`t advise too often trims afterwards but a regulary short trim every 3/4 months. Let your hair do what it wants.

Here are detailed instructions one woman wrote out on how she cuts her own hair. She does a pretty good job at it, too. :)

I Agree.. Only trim your hair if it needs it. Damaged, split endes etc. Just because damage detracts from the beauty of long hair. I went 2 years with only trimming my hair about 4 times and it looked great and hit the lower part of my back. But once it the ends became damaged, they had to go. So even though it is shorter now, it looks great and will always grow back. Some say that trims promote healthy hair growth. But I do not agree. Hair will grow anyway... just when it is healthy, you notice the length more than if it is tipped with porous and parched split ends.
