Hi! I am new to this forum, and also with mininum knowledge in hair styles :) so I have few questions for you
I am a man and plan to have some braids done, something like this: http://ohioclassic.com/images/2004%20Photos/Ludacris%20closes%20out%20the%202004%20game.jpg - link
Not necessary the length, but the style i'm interested
And my questions are:
1.How long my hair has to be to be possible to have these braids done (the minimun length)
2. For how long can I keep them and how do I take care of it(how to wash...)
Any other specifications would be very helpful.
Thank you very much

It would depend on the braider for how long your hair has to be. You have some who can really pick-up the peas but on average I would say at least an inch.

If you tie your head up at night you can get at least 3-4 weeks looking good.

Here's my routine-

You definetly have to wash in the shower. I water down my conditioner and shampoo so that it will glide easier through the braids. You know about how much you put in your hand to wash, well put that and a little more in a bottle and add some warm water. Use a bottle that has a spout, I use an old sports drink bottle. You know, one that will squirt.

Stand with your back to the shower, wet your hair, step away from water - apply shampoo down the rows and massage it through the rows in ONE direction, from top to bottom. If you go up and down the rows you wil be fuzzy.

Once it's been massaged good in your scalp work some in the ends of your braids - rinse and add conditioner the same way. I personally add conditioner then bathe, that way the conditioner gets to sit for awhile. Rinsing comes as the final thing I do before stepping out of the shower.

Pat not rub dry with a towel and apply a braid spray, I prefer Better Braids and I use morning and night.

I know it was long but people don't think you can wash braids and still look decent. Of course you won't look salon fresh, but they will hold up.

That is how I washed mine. The way BabyDimple is saying. Except, I used a sponge to work the shampoo through my hairand scalp lightly. The braids still looked good after all that. (I washed mine every week and wet them twice a week.)

make sure that you oil your scalp as needed- maybe use olive oil or sweet almond oil. Tie your hair up with a du-rag or silk or satin scarf before going to sleep at nite. Let us know how it turns out for you.

If your hair is really short you could have your stylist use a tiny piece of weave to baid it, you won't even notice it and it will be alot neater. Or you could get invisible cornrows done. I recently braided a friend's hair in this style ( Is this the same 1 from the video with him and Jamie Foxx?). He loved it, and is coming back to get it done again. It was challenging because I only had the video on my computer to look at so we had to keep watching it. He's a perfectionist and wanted it exactly the same. (Sorry y'all, I just talk too much)

Oh I forgot another secret when I'm getting into that 4th week and starting to look kind of fuzzy.

I use wave noveau moisturizer on my braids. I guess any curl moisturizer would be heavy enough. I slick my braids with it then tie it down until it dries, I use it like a gel on the edges and the braids themselves. Not only will it beat the fuzz but your hair will be in the best condition when you take them down.

Any braider worth her weight can pickup and inch. When you stop to think about it that's about as long as 1 joint of your finger.

Like Beautywitch said to keep this style most of these braids you see have extension hair added. It does help to maintain the look by holding your hair in place. Believe me I lived in Los Angeles for over 20yrs and worked with many musicians & actors (perming, braiding etc.) "it ain't all what you think you see."
