I was reading an article yesterday by a hairdresser specialising in long hair which said you should comb hair when wet, but brush when dry. This was on the basis that if you brush hair when wet it stretches, but if you comb it when dry it breaks.

Has anyone else heard of this?

I bought a snag free paddle brush a while back (the cushion is under a 'solid' section so the bristles move but the hair doesn't get tangled around them) and have found that this is actually better for my dry hair than a comb as I have noticed a lot more breakage since I started using my comb on dry hair.         & nbsp;         & nbsp;         & nbsp;         & nbsp;    Just thought this was quite interesting.

I agree with the part about it being bad to brush wet hair, but not so sure about it being bad to comb dry hair.  I think it was Anais who said once that a brush is just a row of combs.  I could see how a row of combs could stretch weak wet hair more, creating more pull.  But if one comb could break dry hair, it seems rows of them would just break it more.

I think if you get a seamless comb and start at the bottom and work your way up, you are doing as less damage as you can.  (And good or bad, I love my brush and ain't givin' it up!).

Agreed, it really depends on the purpose of the brush. A brush is much better used as scalp massage, distributing oil, or smoothing canopy hair than used to detangle... I think brushes should never be used to detangle hair because there is much more resistance with a brush than a comb. Detangling is a process that requires a good view of the hair you are working with. A brush doesn't provide that as well as a comb.

However it could also be the comb used. Molded (seam-ful) combs could be worse than seamless brushes.

heehee thanks Susan, the "row of combs" thing was me.

For some reason, using a comb forces me to go slowly and carefully and not rip through my tangles. When I use a brush, I always go faster and invariably end up breaking and pulling hairs.

It is strange, my comb is seamless, wooden and the right size but my hair does seem to prefer brushing when dry.

Particularly strange as my hair is incredibly tangle prone!

I am totally confused now!  Think I'll stick with the comb and brush for now...

I always use a comb, wet and dry.  The only time I use a brush (paddle) is right before washing it, to remove any remaining fallen-out strands.

However, I do know a woman who only uses a brush when dry and she seems to be able to work through tangles without inducing any damage.  Oh and by the way, her hair is silky straight and thigh-length.
