Forgive me, I'm new here  But can someone please  tell me what a pre-shampoo is and the steps you take to do it?  If it is for hair health, I want to know all about it!

Pre-Poo is basically treating your hair either with a hot oil treatment or a conditioning/deep condtioning treatment before you wash your hair. Its not necessary to pre-poo, but the hair can benefit from it.

Thanks for the info, but won't the extra oil block your shampoo from doing it's job?  I appreciate the help.

The extra oil shouldn't block your shampoo.  When I wear my hair natural i love to pre-poo w/cholesterol or Africa's Best hair mayonaise.

Oh, and welcome to the board.

Okay, great, so what added benefit does pre-poo'ing provide? What are some of the things you pre-poo with?  Cholesterol? EVOO?    Do you wet your hair first?

i put castor oil on dry hair and apply a thin plastic cap and then a satin scarf and sleep on it overnite and poo in the a.m. If time or company does not permit that- then in the a.m. i will do this and sit under the dryer for 15-30 mins and then shampoo as usual.

Most of us have dry hair due to the curly/coily texture and it is hard for oil to reach the ends so the is helps it along and also keeps the shampoo from being as drying and stripping all of our natural oils away.

If you sit under a dryer with a pre-poo, do you still begin with dry hair?  Just wondering if sitting under a dryer will dry it out even more or heat the oil up until it us unbearable???

Well the reason why I pre-poo is because most shampoos available are pretty harsh and alkaline on my hair.  Even when I just lather once, it cleans my hair too well.  I mainly focus the shampoo on the scalp, not the hair.  Since I don't use much styling products and if I do, it is pretty much water soluble.  The purpose of doing the pre-poo is to prevent the shampoo from stripping the hair too much of the oils and also maintain some kind of elasticity in the hair.

The purpose of sitting under the dryer is to open up the hair cuticles to accept the oils.  Some oils are simply too large to pass through the hair cuticles, so it merely coats the hair, according to an old cosmetology book my mother has.

By golly!  I think I got it

What are some of the other products you use to prepoo?  I've heard castor oil, cholesterol.  Do some of you use your own organic/natural mixtures?

I personally like extra virgin olive oil.  Why I picked this is oil is because that's the oil we have in the house .  But I think any olive oil will do.  I have also used some extra virgin olive oil with a bit of castor oil mixed in.  I have used jojoba oil, grapeseed and safflower oil.  Not too crazy about the last two.  I also used some conditioners that I didn't like and I wanted to get rid of like Capilo Gusano de Seda (not a bad conditioner but it wasn't what I needed now) or Neutrogena Triple Moisture Hair Masque.

I've pre-poo'd w/honey and olive oil or cholesterol and olive oil added.  I really like those.  And also coconut milk I love!
