I used to see her on Cascade Road....and when she moved to SANDY SPRINGS (Roswell Road), I followed her there.

Anyone living here knows that's a loooooooong drive on 285....and Roswell Road is ALWAYS crowded, too!

I don't follow just any stylist.

I would have walked out too! They wouldn't be touching my hair. Like Champ said, their nastiness would probably flow over into how they treat and care for your hair.

I don't like salons and you will only find me in one if I am desperate. Most aren't happy to see me in the first place.

I agree...be very aware of a stylist acting like that..That's usually the first warning..and when something goes wrong with your hair and you think its something you've done ohh they will be quick to be like.."well you need this and this and this" basically having you spending all types of money and what they are doing is not helping. I would have walked out of there though. But not all stylist are like that Thank God! LOL

also, i might add..because i have a mixed ethnic background..no one can really tell what nationality i am..some say puerto rican with nappy hair, panamanian, african american, creole, etc.,.i speak a bit of a few languages..so one day, i made an appt. with someone in the hispanic part of town.the advertisement said they did "all types" of hair..i made the appt. speaking spanish without thinking..but when i showed up..all hell broke loose..

They thought it was a joke...what was worse, i spoke english when i came into the salon..thus, they went off into a tirade of who would do the "mayate's" hair..some said "morena"  or "negra" at least...for those of you who don't know what the word "mayate" means in english..it's the hispanic version of the "n" word..(or an insignificant "bug")

one beautician said to her co-workers in spanish she would do my hair, but i would have to wait a while. some other beauticians started laughing.my appt. was at 2:00 p.m. and after being pretty much crapped on, it was about 2:15 p.m.  i apologized to them in spanish, and excused myself saying that i would go elsewhere...the place was so quiet you could a pin drop..  i walked out...

I've been in Asian salons..they were rude...and i walked out..African American salons...yep, you got it...rude...there, moreso than most cultures, mainly because i frequented them more often..what's worse, after 5 years of going to one that i really liked..she asked for money, and has yet to pay me back...now...whenever i call, i get her voicemail..

I have finally found a professional beautician who is in Elk Grove..i really like her, her work, but most of all her professionalism..she's african american, takes pride in herself, the way she carries herself, and how she treats her clients...i have found that she "hand picks" her clients..how she does this is:  She doesn't have clients that disrespect her, thus, she has no reason to disrespect them"...

Good for you!  I also trip latinos/hispanics out when I eavesdrop and reply in spanish  Now if I can pick up Vietnamese while I'm at the nail shop and I'll be str8.

No, I think it is a woman thing. Women hate on other women no matter what their background is.

ooooh, femmemuscle....you live near Elk Grove, IL? Have you ever heard of James Iha? I used to have the BIGGEST FREAKING CRUSH on him back when the Pumpkins were popular!!! He and his family are from Elk Grove!!! I would so drive around looking for the Ihas if I were there!!! STALKERRAMA TIME!

Back on topic, Atlanta African American stylists tend to mostly be professional because there are so many salons and they know we can literally just walk out and go across the street! There are at least 10-12 salons just within a short drive from my home (if I were to use the bus/train system or drive beyond Greenbriar and West End Malls, that would make HUNDREDS of stylists available)....and I still drive 20-30 minutes away to see my stylist! The stylists here KNOW that we can find someone else and don't have to go to them.

Again, if you have a problem with a stylist, walk out the FIRST time they give you attitude!

femmemuscle, I would have IMMEDIATELY said, "No thank you, I'll go where I'm appreciated" in Spanish and walked out.

But, again, I'm lucky. I've NEVER had a stylist give me attitude. I had my nails done (a LONG time ago when I used to have my nails done) at a salon where the women would always compliment my skin and hair and would suggest what colors would look good on me.

Do you relax yourself? I'm so afraid to do my own chemicals because I know NOTHING about them. Also, with my texturizer, it's very precise.

I figure I'd rather pay to have it done right, than get it screwed up for free. But if you can do your own relaxer, that's GREAT! I wish I could!

If anyone from Atlanta is interested in Taliah Wajid (sp?) products for natural hair, she has a salon near the West End. I've never tried her products or her services, but I've seen posts in different places on the web raving about her.

Yep. That's why. They usually turn me down when I step foot in their place of "business". I only used to go for relaxers. My mom always told me it was because they didn't want to deal with my hair. When I did find one that took me, she combed my hair the wrong way, I lost lots of hair, she trimmed... I mean CUT it, as well as let other folks play in my hair. She also charged too much. 75$ is too much for a relaxer, IMO. I don't see her anymore. My mom does my hair.

My mom always says that I wouldn't be able to get all the chemicals out of my hair and that relaxing long hair is hard. I think I could do it though. I've been wanting to do it myself for a long time (years) and I'm not scared to try. Maybe I will get around to it. (I only relax about 2 times a year)

i live in California, for the last 4 years...in el granada...and have to drive about  100 miles to elk grove, near sacramento..

The beautician who borrowed  money by the way was from Atlanta, Georgia..She goes my the name of "Storm", but her name was Betty Robinson...

She was professional to an extent, but couldn't say "no" when other clients walked in on my appointments, and wanted to hang  out and talk, or get their hair done right away while my head was in the bowl..Storm booked by "appt. only"...but I usually had to be the one speak up and tell them that I had paid money for a certain time slot of hair repair, as well as privacy..and would they please be so kind and to let me keep this..

The first years that i went to her, she stuck to her policy, then after a while, when more "potential" clients came by, or people she knew, she relaxed on the rules.

they would get offended and leave, call the beautician up on her cell phone while she's working on my head, (i have very good ears), and of course, storm would "yeah, she's crazy" or "she don't like folks around her that's all".Instead of just saying "i book by appt. only" .then when she's off the phone, turn right around and say "Thanks for speaking up..because if i speak up, I'd lose the client"...that way, i could be the scape goat...

all of the beauticians in the south are not professional, culturally, as well as geographically, there are severall "bad eggs" in the business..i don't speak a few languages because i sat at home watching television..i've been all over this country many times...dealing with women most of the time has taught me patience...dealing with men has taught me to be direct and straightforward in my language, while leaving emotion out of it..

I just settled down with my boyfriend of 4 years now...and i'm 44 years old..the problem is i don't look my age at all...thus, i get spoken to as if i'm some kind of 19 or 20 year old...this, too has taught me much patience..whether at the beauty shops, or in the Surgery Suites.

Why do some salonists have attitudes? Its has nothing to do with enthenticity nor any other justifiable reason. Its just good old fashion disrespect. Commonly stylist and barbers have obtained attitudes being independent contractors because the forget that the disipline and customer service must come first and should be natural. There not monitored by any real structure, so they can esily become unprofessional, sometimes forgetting that they still are a business first. This trend is common in alot of fields were there are independent contractors.THE CUSTOMER IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PERSON IN YOUR BUSINESS.

Another important thing is to seperate your personal life from your professional life, no matter how much your client shares. Is always about your client, thats what they pay you for. The worst mistake a stylist can do is complain to a stylist about there personal life.

If a stylist has to have attitude about a client spending their time and money then its time to move on.

I wish I could do it....but I only have it done twice a year and it's the only time I go, so it's not so bad.

It's a good thing you know how to do it, because if you relax your hair straight, you may have to be in there every 2 months!

i believe it might has something to do with ignorance or lack of education in professionalism...period..

i have noticed that people that live in poverty stricken areas cateror don't cater to poverty stricken clients.if you screw over someone who has no money - then so what?  but if you screw over someone who has connnections, money, lawyers and authority, your business could be brought down in no time...those that live in more affluent societies know that if a rich person comes into their salon and pays good money for their services there is definitely a code of conduct to be followed or you are "outa there"...

i've noticed that in more affluent areas, when a beautician starts causing problems or has personal problems they are '86'd quickly..in more poverty stricken areas...if they see there are problems, they are far more lax with their beauticians, and let them get away with far more than an affluent person would tolerate...mainly because they don't seem to think most dysfunction is a problem...until several clients start going to the competition down the street..This too, is ignorance..

The beautician in Elk Grove had just gotten rid of one of her subordinate who was an african amercian beautician who was professional at first..then began booking clients in the wrong slots..plus coming in with her hair in rollers, wearing sweats and house slippers...this dysfunctional behavior, and lack of professionalism was apparently acceptable at her last salon, in a far less affluent neighborhood.

the subordinate was very professional at first, but she soon became too comfortable...her defense was, "well the last salon didn't seem to mind me comin' in like this"...she was 86'd that day..

The place where i frequent is very upscale, and This woman is the only African American beautician there...she, too, finds it hard to keep professional african american sans "attitude"...

We can try to overlook this...but i, too have complained to others wondering the problem is with rudeness especially from this culture, and the explanation was the just the same.."you should know how negroes are"...i was told this in several african american salons..

Some of them say it behind closed doors, when they are quite comfortable and say "you know how we are"....

might as well put it out there....Yes, ignorance is prevalent in all cultures, but when it pointed out through someone's experience, you might as well say, "okay, we have some bad eggs just like everyone else..."

When you evade the situation...it makes it even more obvious..just put it out there..

It's not what they usually charge here.

I wouldn't have been outraged if it was the norm. I'm not in Atlanta like you. I've never been to Georgia. I won't be getting my hair done there if I ever visit either. Not with those prices. That's too much. You need to come to Texas to get your hair done.  I used to get mine done here, in Texas, Houston and in the Woodlands, TX. It's much cheaper here, for some.

They have on their signs everywhere I go: $35.00 (sometimes 45.00, but mostly I see $35.00) for a relaxer, wash, and cut. And that is what they charge the others. I watch. The prices are just not for me in any of those places when it is my turn to get my hair done.

I don't know if she does natural hair, but I've pm'ed you both with her information so you can call her. When I first went to her, she blow dried and trimmed my natural hair, but I don't know if she does anything else.

Listen  I  emailed  her  asking some  of  the  questions  we  ask  and  answer  for  eachother  in  here.  She  got  all  huffy.  She  was  advertising  her  extension  line,  and  BLASTING  on  the  other  methods  and  stylists  ,so  I  figured  I'd  ask  her  about  Invisible  Strands  using  the  dental  floss, right,  she  str8  got  an  attitude  I  told  her  I  was  reporting  her  to  the  BBB.

She  had  not  ever  heard  of  the  technique,,,but  she  could  have  just  said  that.  She  was  offended  that  I asked  her  about  someone  elses  technique.

I  told  her  oFf  ,,,of  course  and  proceeded  to  diagnose  her,  as  needing a  loading  dose  of thorazine ...funky   Cow! 

Africans  have  a  tendancy  in  Chicago to  act  crazy.

One  time  ol'  girl  was  scared  for  me  to  go  to  the  friggin  ATM  with  her  husband.  He  literally  had  to  push  her  away  from  the  car.  I  thought  they  could  take  my  credit/debit  card  but  they  had  a  limit  to  the  dollar  amount  they  could  take  at  one  time.

I  looked  like  a  friggin  fool...eyes  slanetd...those  braids  darn  near  killed  my  hair  line.

I  must  have  been  crazy  back  then  all  that  money  to  have  to  take  5  tylenol  for  the  head  ache  those  braids  gave  me..............its  been  going  on  7  years  sinse  I  had  braids.
