You can't do what you are suggesting, but you can transition- you don't have to do a big chop. Transitioning simply means that you are growing out your perm but you are working with both textures until you are ready to do your chop. Some people can successfully do this for a year or two- but it takes a lot of work and practice- you can keep your hair in pencil sized braids or twists or rollersets to ease the pain of dealing with the two textures. Hope this helps.

I agree with Carameldiva. But I'd like to add that from my tranisistoning experience currently  (6 months) that after a while the permed hair wares of and the hair gets these little zig-zag wavys when it's wet so in a way it's like getting rid of your old permed hair.

7 months transition here and I can't say I have the privilege like deexox where my relaxed hair waves up.  I got dem ROOTS then I got the relaxed hair, big difference.

Well, I was in your same predicament once before. What did I do? I washed it with very harsh shampoo (Suave Clarifying) and DISH LIQUID DETERGENT. It was still relaxed, but it was so frizzy and hard that it was almost the same as natural. This only worked when I had a cheap "box" relaxer. When I had a really good straight professional relaxer (like Dudley), my hair wouldn't nap up no matter what I did to it, and then I did the "big chop".

Keep in mind that this kind of washing is most likely very damaging and definitely very drying. I didn't care so much at the time about having "healthy" hair, I just wanted NAPPY hair, but my hair was very dry and frizzy and hard all over. Just remember that you can't do this and have HEALTHY hair. So, if you want HEALTHY hair, I wouldn't recommend this AT ALL.

Hair type: who knows?
Length: 23 inches as of 3/10/06
MY HAIR IS OFFICIALLY BRA STRAP LENGTH!!
Goal: Waist Length, which is only 30 inches so
ADVISE ME ON HOW TO GET JUST 7 MORE INCHES OF GROWTH!

You dont have to BC your hair if your not ready for that. You can grow it out (transition) by gradually trimming off the perm ends. In the meantime make sure to keep your hair moisturized especially your new growth and ends. Also you may wanna try out protective styles like buns, braidouts and twistouts as an alternative for dealing with the different textures.

Thanks all.  My hair now is past my shoulders.  And most of my permed hair is already waving up after a shampoo.  Im currently wearing a braidout.  My hair grows at a decent rate so I hope this works.  But would it be better to keep it braidied?  Im just worried that it would weaken by hair or break it off because I have never worn weave braids before.  I have always had long hair. So for those of you who have or are currently transitioning did you wear single braids and did it break off your hair or put stress on it?

I've worn braid extensions on and off since Jan. of this year. I've never experienced any breakage or damage. As long as your hair is in good condition and you take the proper steps to maintain the health of your hair while in braids you shouldnt experience any problems.

Just want to inform you wanabnappy, ou can't shampoo a relaxer out.  Nor is there a chemical that can reverse it.

I know I can't shampoo it out.  I do know that a lot of shampooing with a certain type of shampoo or soap will harder your hair or turn the permed hair into a more wavy texture in my case nstead of it being bone straight.  Thanks for the post.
