Hi Jlabradors,
You’re almost right about Black salons, but not all Black salons. The majority of Black salons use sodium hydroxide relaxer method, hence they are not versed with the thioglycolate method.
girly4216 had mentioned Rusk (most likely she meant Rusk STR8) and Bio Ionic so her reference is about Japanese Hair Straightening (aka Thermal Reconditioning or for short 'TR'. Thermal Ionic was a Jherri Redding product and then Babyliss bought them out. Thermal Ionic, had been discontinued in Canada and probably the same will happen in the USA, but that’s besides the point. Thermal Ionic was not a good TR System to begin with.
I am sorry, but the price people pay has no bearing to the results they receive. Besides, the minimum price I saw on the boards for the TR service in North America is $250 and the majority of salons add additional charges for hair cut and hair treatment, so the cost goes up.
Salons that charge $250 have their apprentices doing the process. The apprentice or new stylist doesn't really understand what they're doing; they just do as told. Moreover, they use 2 or 3 guys doing the process, which is wrong to begin with and that is why there are so many botched TR jobs. No one does TR for $100!!! My start price is $650 and it always includes hair Treatment immediately after the TR service.
Also, most failed jobs is NOT necessarily because of lack of information given by the client; in fact, it is the lack of proper consultation and lack experience and skill on the part of the stylist himself or herself and NOT the client, so it is not the client's mistake. The client pays for the services by trusting the salon and or stylist, thinking that they are the pros and they know what they're doing. NOT SO!!! It is too sad to see so many people do not receive the service they willingly paid for.
And as for your reference in “telling the stylist if you have ever done anything chemically at home or another shop in the last year”. Actually, one year is not enough! Especially if the client’s hair was previously relaxed with lye (Sodium Hydroxide) relaxer or no-lye (lithium, potassium or calcium hydroxide or guanidine carbonate) relaxer.
PS- Everyone should read my posting of today on my TR Forum Subject: Timing for each Process.
