We hair shrinkage and bunches of breakage because our hair is naturally dry. This makes it a bit harder for our hair to grow and retain length.

I don't think there is any difference in the growth rates of hair between different races.  The difference is that our hair is more fragile and more prone to breakage.  That is why it may appear not to grow as fast.  That's why people make such a big deal here of protecting ends, conditioning etc.

Also, IMO, black women seem more likely to hold onto damaged hair than other people. My hair has been buzzed 3 times in the last 10 years. It only takes 15 months or so for buzzed aa hair to reach the neck/shoulders (bottom layer of naturally layered hair), but so many women think their hair won't grow or grows slowly that they're not brave enough to buzz their hair if it's all damaged.

My shortest layer is right above my shoulders, and the last time I buzzed was 3 years ago. If your hair is damaged, there's no point in holding onto it.

Also, there's too much "brand loyalty". I know too many people who complain about hair dryness and breakage who have been using the same products they've been using for the last 15 years with no good results. As the saying goes, if you do what you've always done, you're going to get what you've always gotten. So, if you have dry hair and your "grease" hasn't been helping for 15 years, IT'S NOT GOING TO HELP.....get a new product!

Well...there is shrinkage. Even if you are relaxed you will have shrinkage because your new growth is still natural until you relax it. Not all white people have long hair...there are some who complain that their hair only gets to ear length or shoulder length. Your friends might have straight hair...do they?  If so...gaining length is easier to see on straight hair because it travels right down the back unlike curly/tightly curly hair that has to be stretched manually or chemically to see the actual length.

Everyone's hair grows.

i think the reason that their hair seems to grow faster is because they have a regimen. they probably wash, condition, dry everyday. it becomes very normal and thus the hair gets use to the everyday cycle. With our hair, i think  a lot of us tend to not have a very good regimen and we dont give our hair a chance to get use to a cycle. we wash every couple days, may get it braided and not wash for months, relax every now and then, etc. it just seems to be very challenging for the hair if it went through something like this.

i just think of hair as a plant. a plant needs water, sunlight, and sometimes food. 3 very basic, easy things. maybe we should all pick 3 basic products and things to do to our hair and it will then grow regularly
