If all these things are bad for our hair then why do companies continue to put those ingridents in hair products further more why doesnt the FDA step in and make them stop lying to us. I mean if it were food and a food product caused arms and legs to break off then there would be trouble.....what should we as consumers do other than to just stop buying the product because thats not going to work it has to be something more than that any ideas?

I think these products you are talking about ( am i right in saying you mean so called 'hair foods' that has protrelum and mineral oil etc in them ?)are here to stay because companies know they add bulk to their products which means they make more money and we get less of a product,,... so you are not getting anything natural or in fact nourishing in most cases. These products serve its purpose for some and not for others.

I believe the only way around this is to educate ourselves as much as possible about the alternatives and lets try to keep our products as natural as possible ( it can seem more expensive though but the benefits to the hair are worth it in my opinion ) In saying that we can invest more time in home made recipies which has less expense and more benefits.

What i've notice more and more is that alot of so called popular black hair care products are now redisigning their labels with 'Botonical this and 'plant extract ' that to compete with the growing market of pure and natural unrefined products. It doesn't mean these contain any pure products in it.

I personally haven't got any ideas beyond stop buying although it would be empowering to have the power to eradicate some of these products that are no good for our hair. All we can do is make the choice and do more research into hair products.  For example yesterday i came across a person who has her own business making natural /organaic hair products and she makes these to order and adjusts the ingredients to suit different hair types.

A while ago i received an email about hair products we should stop using because of the synthetic ingredient base.

We do have the individual power to make the choice to change our  hair care products to a more natural base . Our Ancestors used what naturally came from the ground .... FOOD FOR THOUGHT

(Bwoy that was a good long rant)

I'm with you Sharon, I've just stop buying mineral oil based products.  I now use organic shampoos/conditioners, shea butter for my hair and MTG for my scalp.  I even got rid of my ORS because there were too many ingredients that I couldn't pronounce   I do use a promade for laying down my edges when I wear a pony tail, and the ingredients of that is; petrolatum, olive oil, castor oil, lanolin and fragrance.

well i agree with all of u, but i think the FDA does not put a stop to it because to my knowledge there hasnt been a real scientific test stating that those ingredients are bad for us. even on this forum, i have read that sum of the ladies still use products with those ingredients because it doesnt do bad things to their hair. for me, i dont buy any products with them because i just cant stand a greasy head. the only solution is 2 just not buy the products that contain the ingredients that u feel dont work best for u.

Basically it boils down to profits.  Using cheap and possibly dangerous profits help line the shareholder's pockets and the people who run them.  Also the FDA doesn't really regulate the hair care sector as strictly as the food and drug sector.  Quite possibly since we don't eat or drink hair care products.

I agree we should right to companies and also inform the general public about certain hair care ingredients.
