Hello all,

I colored my hair with semi-permanent color last night and it is way too dark! I am a brunette and generally have a nice chestnut color and I used a Hazelnut color, and my hair is so dark and harsh!

Please, does anyone have any ideas as to how I can tone this down? Shall I redye my hair with a lighter color, or is there a way to remove this horrible darkness?

Thanks for any advice!

Hi

I am no expert but have read loads on these great forums. As you used a semi it will begin to fade anyway. You won't be able to lighten it with another dye, only dyes containing bleach ( peroxide ) can do that but using peroxide is very damaging to the hair. My advice to you would be to wash your hair using a anti dandruft shampoo, prell or I've even read that dish washing liquid is good at helping to fade a semi permanent  colour. Don't panic....its only a semi so what ever happens, it will fade with every wash. Hope this helps. Good Luck

Hello Dulcie,

Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly! I realize that thankfully, the color is semi, but if I add a redish tone, do you think it will look less harsh? I truly appreciate your advice and have used Prell or dish detergent in the past.

What do you think about using a redish color?

Hi

Well, You could give that a try but I'm just a little concerned that it may go even darker. Personally I would stick with shampooing with the prell or dish detergent to try and fade it. Your other alternative would of course to do a stand test with the red and see how it looks.

I can remember when this happened to me. First time trying to dye my hair dark blonde -- it turned out ..uh? ..just unexplainable. Blotchy, chuncks of brown patches everywhere ..so I just went and dyed over it with a darker brown dye. Dumb, I know. Well, finally, I wanted to lighten it.. I had to use a color remover such as Colorfix and then re-dye it the color I wanted.

Balliva,
I'd advise you to NOT add any more color at this time!  I agree it will just make your hair darker.  You'd just be adding color, not lifting any.

It will fade.  You'll probably be happier with it in a few days.
Good luck!

Hello Dulcie~

Thanks again for your advice. I colored over the dark with a bright blonde, and at least I have a bit of highlighting coming through.

I will continue to wash with Prell adn eventually, thankfully, my chestnut color will come back!

Take care!

Lindi

Hello Karen,

Thank you for commenting and for your advice! I will keep shampooing and hopefully, I have learned my lesson to go lighter rather than darker.

Take care~
