Foils by a landslide! They look far more natural looking.

The cap is ok to use on short hair however if you do use the cap don't start pulling hair that is below the occipital bone at the back of your head thru the cap or it will start to look crazy.

In a related question...what are some good methods for a DIYer that has had some experience coloring and highlighting their own hair?

I haven't personally tried this, but my friend got good results doing this. For a subtle, non chunky high light look, take 3-4 quarter inch thick pieces of hair from the front and sides on each side of head for a total of 6-8, in the back, take one half inch thick piece on each side. Highlight these 8-10 pieces total for a subtle look.

Sounds simple enough...I just hate the idea of using a cap!  I want to be able to see exactly where the highlights are going to be!

I wouldn't attempt putting foils in your head yourself as it is difficult to get the foils close to your scalp.

My friend used that method using foil, but it could apply to either/or.

Foils!  (I did the cap once and hated it.)

I usually do 8-10 strands.  Then if I feel that i didn't do enough, it's easy to just go back and do a few more.
