So, finally, I want to do the streaking, different color extension thing.
Amanda comes to mind first, but everyone on here, when I see the
different colors used, I'm always like "that looks awesome!! I want that!!"

So this time I ordered my current color (dark brown) and some lighter
shades. (D-LUX from YHS.com #D5/14 and #D10/16)

I tried doing this before, but it didn't work out so well...so, for everyone
who does this color thing, how can I make it blend well and look good? Is
there some secret?

Also, my top layer is dark brown (this is where I have the problem) so
anytime I try to do a lighter color, it makes my top layer look totally
different and makes it more obvious I have extensions. Do I put a few
layers of brown on the top? Should I highlight my hair to match the
streaks?

Any help or suggestions I would just love and appreciate! Thanks!

you can either highlight your hair OR put a row of the darker brown extensions above the lighter highlights to get rid of that obvious line

My rule of extensions is like Kate says, you have to do the last two rows in the colour of the natural hair or you see the obvious line.  If you really want to get away from this you'll have to go up to the front I'm afraid or dye streaks in your hair the same colour as the extensions you want.  Failing that do your extensions as you've described and then make some clips for when you wear your hair down xx

My own hair is a mix of #2 Dark Brown and a coppery golden brown
(Schwarzkopf 4-57) that doesn't really match any of the colors on the
Elite Remy color ring I have. What I've found works best for
blending the extensions into my own hair this -- when I make my
double wefts, I put a #2 weft at the top with a coppery one that I've
dyed to match right underneath. (I got Elite Remy #33 which is a
lighter auburn and just slapped on the color with 10 Volume
developer, same as when I color my own hair.) Then I continue all
the way down with the darker color on top and the coppery color
underneath in each double weft. It really blends in the top while still
picking up the copper highlights. I thought of highlighting the #2 in
little sections with foil but realized it was much easier to dye a whole
long weft the coppery color and then just alternate colors when I
installed. I go to my stylist for occasional trims and she can't believe
how well the extensions blend into my hair.
