So I clipped my ends yesterday for the first time, and let's just say..the are a lot better now!  I feel relief, but I think I just realized the my roots are curly, like tightly coiled ringlets, and I truely have curly hair!I have never seen this until I a few days ago. Awhile back I said I was going to lie off the texlaxing until I get my hair back in order, and now this.  I NEVER KNEW I HAD CURLY HAIR! Oh the deceptions of relaxers.  So now I'm getting tangles EVERYWHERE, and it hurts to comb through! no matter how much detangler I put on it.  I currently use Motion's Leave In, and Infusium as my detanglers..they worked just fine...but as my hair grows here and there..the curly's keep comming along..Oh My! I try to pull them apart but it doesn't work to the extent I want it to be(there are still more tangles)  What to do?!  I don't wanna buy another product but I think I have to..or else I end up with holes, or knots of hair at the ends:(Me and Curly Hair, Oh I never knew!

You can cut your relaxed hair off. When I was transitioning the line of demarcation would always tangle so much but my hair is so much easier to detangle since the big chop.

.. But I'm not transitioning, so why should I big chop.  I don't like curly hair, on me, period.

OMG...girl, if you're black with two black parents, chances are you have curly hair.  Heck, if you only have ONE black parent, chances are you have curly hair. How old are you?

This may be something that seems totally political or whatever, but this is one reason I oppose relaxers on people under 17. PG, you're not the only black girl who's been relaxed so long, you don't even know what your real hair looks/feels like.... and then go on to have daughters, have no idea what to do with their hair, and put them in a relaxer at age 6. And then they have no idea what their really hair is like.

No offense to you personally, PG, and I'm truly sorry if I did offend you. It's nothing personal against you. I just wish more black women would know their own hair before they did ANYTHING to it. Then it would be NORMAL for all of us to have long, healthy hair.

You're right.  You are totally right, Renata.  Actually I was pretty certain that I had 4b hair up until now.  When I was younger my hair would be in a tight little afro if I air dryed.  And the actually"curlyness is undefined". I never knew I had defined coils...its like have 4b hair and then you wake up with 3b/3a

I agree as well with Renata....man my mom did NOT allow me to relax my hair until my 9th grade year (well the summer of my first year in HS). She did however take me to the hairdresser every other week just for maintainence before hand or a press and curl because I have thick hair. Anyways At that point of your new growth and relaxed hair try to keep that area well moisturized, which should help with toning down the tangles. Also a CO-Wash can sometimes also help too. Or what you can do after a shampoo and deep conditioner is to attempt to wrap, rollerset or blowdry on low heat with a protectant and flat iron your hair if its too much trouble with the tangles. That should also help. But thats just my opinion/advice. HTH

Just to comment of what Renata said . It was not only until i shaved my hair down to a number one fror three years and grew my hair back i can now say i know my real hair type- i guess the hair i was born with? I lost concept of my real type when my mother agreed to me having a relaxer at he age of 12/13. I then went through the hair journey in my adulthood most of us have gone through; the ups and downs of it all blah blah..... etc etc.  I'm glad i was forced to start from scratch and this was as a result of me trying the loc my hair and not quite realising i could not loc with a mix of natural and old traces  of chemicled hair. So after having a not so sucessful loc journey i shaved it off. Funny enough this was the best hair journey as i had too many comments about my no. 1 hair do and i loved  it

My advice to you PG is to work towards getting to know your own hair type and free the chemicals. When i did this years ago the only words i can use to describe my experience is : I had a love affair with my hair ( Oh yeah break ups too ) but in the end i found true love with my hair and the realtionship is still going strong!!

Maybe its just me...but I'm not sure I understand what Pickle's hair emergency is?

Tangles are the emergency, and I am looking for some advice on whether I should get a new product, or maybe a detangling method to use. Bascially having to cope with a totally different texture.

And you all are totally bashing my mother's decision to put a relaxer in my hair.  I made the decision to do so because it made the styling situation a lot eaiser, because I was tenderheaded.  My hair actually grew past brastrap length with the relaxer..so it wasn't too bad.  I'm glad I did get a relaxer, but not knowing my true texture, up until now, is saddening.  Now I have to decided at an older age how to care for it.  I am definitely lying off the texlaxes for awhile because I don't feel my hair is in it's best shape.  Theres a lot of work to be done here, and it won't be made eaiser with chemicals!

Well Pokohantas and Tyff recomended S-curl no drip activator and moisturizer . Its not a detangler as such on the label but if my hair can soften up beautifully with it, and without all the stress and snags of a comb than i'm sure this would help you.  I can actually finger comb now which was a no no before. This is the bomb and i wish i had discovered it way before now . It has no pretrelum or mineral oil in it for all hair types and contains Glycerine and Vit B5

PickledGeuse, I'm sorry. I misunderstood you. When you said you were taking a break from the relaxers, I thought you meant you were transitioning.

PickledGeuse, Im no expert on having 2 different textures of hair (since ive been natural all my life- not that its a long time)but I can offer you some general advice that seems to work well for me and others.

First off try detangling with a wide tooth comb with lots of conditioner in your hair. Creamy moisterizing condintioners seems to work best.

You might also want to try finger combing your hair if it hurts too much.

and moisturizer is key for your hair. If its dry and brittle is more likely to tangle and break off. So be gentle. Deep conditioning at least once a month would be a good idea to. and don't forget an oil to seal the moister in.

Staying out of your hair during the day helps reduce tangles too because your hands arent messing with it and its natural state.

Don't feel bad that you don't know your natural hair. When I was going natural and my friend had relaxed hair, she was like "I'm glad that I didn't end up with curly, poofy hair like you" and I was like "But you did. It's just not anymore." and she was like "No, I was born with straight hair." and I was like "Blacks don't naturally have straight hair. and she was like "Really?".

Hey Pickles, why don't you use a wide tooth comb to work on the tangles.  Also when your spray the detangler, wait a few minutes and then slowly detangle your hair.

Of course I use a wide tooth comb!  And I'm back to say I still haven't gotten rid of the tangles...I use a good amouint of conditioner and comb it through ..but I'm just way too scared because I always hear that snap crackle and pop on some parts of my hair.. or the tangle just rides to the end and then I have a knot!  It's great that my hair is growing out faster naturally..I just can't deal with these tangles

are you combing from end to roots? that helps get rid of tangles. you might want to try a protein or a cholsterol treatment to add some strength to your hair. But most of all try to be patient and work with your hair. If it doesnt wanna do something dont try to make it cause you will pay for it.

I think I have some strength to my hair which is why it pulls and pulls and then I get mad and rip one through !... I try to be patient but all day detangling is not my idea of a fun time...I don't think I have enough hair to comb from ends to roots, even though I attempt to..that works at times

have you tried using a spray-on hair detangler? This helps me a lot. I get the one from the dollar store- has the same ingredients as the one from CVS.

I've tried motions leave-in, infusium, and Doves Sheer Moisture, all as detanglers.  Sheer moisture is lovely of the three but it still gets tangled..and when it gets tangled it gets super frizzy and the ends look dry.  WTF.. Someone hand me a relaxer!  I'm seriously getting frustrated...I'm actually not leaving the house because of it.  Maybe I just need a new flat iron.  My flat iron didn't feel like it  was getting that hot like it used to... I need to go and get that Solia, or FHI.    If laying off relaxers is gonna be nothing but bad hair days, I might as well say forget it.  This is just way too arduous for me, and I don't have the extra time for it.

PickledGeuse: I feel your pain. I was natural for a year and a half. I just relaxed my hair over the weekend because I couldnt take it! I had bad hair days every day!I sweat in my scalp alot!  I was thinking if I can't make a press and curl last for 2 days  then WTF are my summers going to be like??
