Hey!  Does anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with thick hair?  It's just a bit longer than shoulder length at this point - what I usually do is apply spray gel and scrunch-wave it after washing...  I'd curl it more often but as it has so many layers the process takes quite a while and I'm a bit of a perfectionist so the result rarely ever lays to my desire.  If I do nothing at all and allow it to air dry it ends up kinky, somewhat frizzy and poofy, triangular ends.  Are there any products out there (on the chemical/conditioning spectrum) that might naturally draw the ends down to fall more beautifully?

Any and all thoughts are greatly appreciated!

THere are many things you can do. You can:

1. Have your hair layered. You'll still have your curl/wave in it, but your hair will have a much better looking shape.

2. Have it cut with a razor. What does does is it thins the hair, which makes it lighter and easier to manage. A lot of people get this done, and they cant believe how much bulk is removed and how lighter their hair becomes.

3. Have it relaxed. Thick hair has a lot of volume and when you relax your hair that  curl/wave is smoothed out and slightly straightened which makes it easier to manage and style.

4. Thermally recondition. Completely straightening your hair - a very drastic and costly approach is if you desire straight hair. Personally I dont think it's necessary.

Your best bet would be to get it thinned with the razor or layered if you want to keep your curl/wave. IF you want it straight simply use a straightening iron.

Hey!  Thanks for the advice :)  At the moment my hair is in two layers, just below shoulder-length...  I was wondering if I ought to shorten the top layer.  I just don't know, right now though, because what I think I really need is height at the crown area.  What happens (regardless of hair product I may use to add body at the roots) is throughout the day - after a wash - and a day+ after (I try to avoid washing too often for better hair condition) my hair is so flat on top and I have what is considered a "heart-shaped" or wider face... so I need hair to compliment it!  Oh I'm so frustrated!  I'd have it thinned or straighten it more often if it would look decent but I think I actually need more body!  Just last night I had a thought - what about a perm?  This could give me the height and extra body I desire... and if the ends go outta control I could probably weigh it down with product.. hmm?  I had a perm when I was very young and it held well - looked great and all... but I was one of the tomboyish gals who thought nothing of beauty or appearance.  I really didn't like it then and it was hard to manage but I think now I might really love it.

My only concern is that I've dyed my hair a few times (I don't think I used only bleach product - but I have used storebought colorperm treatments... and colour stripper twice.  If I were to do an at home perm with the Oglivie safe-for color treated hair pack, am I likely to experience serious damage or any other unpleasant surprises?

* I think I've decided to wait on the perm... now may not be a good time.  Thanks again for your thoughts :D
