I am a mother in her mid twenties wearing her straight hair currently at bra strap length but with shorter layers framing my face. My hair until three years ago was worn longer at just above the waist. An appointment has been made with my trusted hairdresser for next Tuesday morning with serious thought being given to lopping my locks into a quite short pixie cut instead of my usual conservative trim.

My hair has never been above shoulder length and consequently some input from any s who have cropped their hair would come as welcome. Did you appreciate your new cut or was it a regretful experience? Some friends have suggested acquiring a bob before continuing to my pixie cut at a later date but my own personal inclination is to give my hair the chop.

I have returned to playing competitive sport since my youngest child commenced school and feel a new shorter hairstyle would be more practical.

Given that it seems the option to go for a pixie cut is yours and you have thought about how it will fit in with your lifestyle, I'd be surprised if you would regret doing it.

From the women that I know who have gone short dramatically, I can't think of any that have regretted doing so (& some think they should have done it sooner).  Probably because it was them who decided the time was right and they were generally fed up having lovg hair, to the point where it no longer was making them happy.

Its your hair, your choice and your decision

Many women link short hair with low maintenance and practicality.  My experience with this varies.  Some women have been very happy with the change and some have not.  Keep in mind the following:

  • If you wear ponytails, few other hairstyles are more practical than this simple option.  It looks acceptable and only takes seconds.  Long hair takes much longer to wash and dry than short hair, however.  Some women say it's a toss-up as to whether short or long hair is easier.
  • A bob is a safe choice if you're concerned that you won't like shorter hair.  It won't take long to grow it back if you have regrets.  However, depending on the length you choose, you may not have the option of putting your hair up when you want it out of your way.  When you're active, the hair tends to get in your face if it's too short to bind it out of the way.
  • Many women who consider short hair will choose a photo of a style they like but ask the stylist to leave it longer than the style pictured.  In many cases, they are disappointed that the resulting style lacks shape and definition and actually requires more effort to make it presentable than did their long hair.  Instead of short hair, they actually end up with a medium-length cut.  Most of these styles have layers.  Anyone with short layers can tell you that when the layers grow out a bit too much, they become difficult to manage.  That's when they call their stylist frantic for a haircut.
  • A pixie is a great choice if you have the face and hair for this type of style.  If you decide to go this route, either you will absolutely LOVE it or absolutely HATE it.  Even though they look sensational with a pixie, some women simply miss their long hair after cutting it.  The only way to know for sure is to jump in with both feet.  If you decide to try a pixie, do yourself and your stylist a favor by steeling your resolve before getting on the chair.  It' only hair...  Either cut it short, or don't cut it short.   Don't try to do it half way because the result may not be what you desire.

You have given us little to go on; no photo, etc.  The best person to ask this question is your stylist.  He/she will evaluate you and your hair to determine whether short hair will work for you.

Keep in mind that it may not be a good choice.  For example: There is a young woman who I see regularly while dropping off our children for school.  She is over 6 feet tall and wears her hair quite short.  While the haircut is well done it looks a bit silly on her because of her stature and features.  It just doesn't fit... like a hat that's too small for her head.

On the other hand, very short hair may be perfect for you.  Your stylist may try to talk you out of it because they are afraid you might not like it, or suggest an in-between style to ease into it.  If you and your hair are well-suited to a short haircut and you're commited but your stylist is reluctant, you may want to find another stylist.

Good luck and have fun!

I'd say go for the ultra-short pixie.
So many women look delightful in that short hairstyle.Wink

The ones who regret it are usually the ones who define themselves by their long hair, or who associate femininity and sex appeal solely with long hair.  You do sound ready to give short hair a go, so if you don't see yourself in either of those categories, I'd say go ahead ^_^ .

Michaela,
As a barber stylist may I suggest that if you do decide to go short. get a cut that will make your features stand out. I just recently cut my wifes hair from a chin length bob to a ultra short clippercut and let me tell you. She has a cut that turns heads. by getting a cut  that uses clippers make hair more pronounced. As a stylist there are times like Rockey stated I try to talk clients into a different style that suits them. Some times successful sometimes not. Having hair of your length cut short can be quite termatic. Are you really ready? My wifes cut was nothing new to her. generaly she grows out come late summer and spring times she has gone as short as a fllattop.I do have other client that had one what you are thinking of  have done. Some have me take it offf a little at a time. I had one lady last week that had gone from hair past her mid back to a very short fade all at once. She and her husband came in together for cuts and I thought she was just waiting for him to get his cut but he told me she was next and he wanted her to do this for a long ,long time. I let him cut her bangs so he was happy and her! As to going for a bob as suggested maybe if you do go chin length first don't go shoulder. If you want the feel of short hair get the cut off the nape area. But what ever you do just remeber Be Happy with your choice.

It was decided to crop my long hair into a pixie cut in 2004. Although more recent months has seen me commence to grow out my hair I can certainly empathise with your current emotions. The tone of your post does suggest that you are ready. Cutting your long hair although dramatic is certainly not traumatic.

Be confident at the salon on Tuesday when articulating what you want and be sure that your stylist understands the same. Providing this is the case sit back and enjoy the process of lopping your locks but also the appreciation of your new pixie cut taking shape.

Personal experience does suggest the decision to go short will not be regretful. Enjoy!

I wouldnt go pixie short all at once, just because if you dont like it, you are going to have a long time to wait before it is anywhere near a length htat you like...
I have had bra-strap length forever...here is a pic (from about a month ago)...this includes extensions for thickness, but the length is correct...

I've been wanting to go shorter for a while...cut it about two weeks ago...this is about 1 inch or so above my shoulders...)...my own hair is wavy anyways, and so I scrunch it for a minute, and it looks like the 1950s style...or I can straighten it and it is razored at the ends, a bit more edge...and it goes in a ponytail too...still a pretty big change, but not overwhelming...

Despite being tempted by the new shorter hair of tbc it was decided to follow one's heart and crop my long locks into a Mia Farrow style pixie cut. It was certainly a dramatic transformation however a sense of satisfaction and fulfilment has been achieved.

With a petite frame and a delicate face such a style really suits. Unfortunately I do not have the technology to post a photo however a big thank you to all of you who offered their much appreciative genuine advice.

Glad to hear you went for the pixie. My own hair is past my shoulders and I'm going to go short again soon. I have chopped my long locks short several times. It is so freeing. I really like my hair short, hope you like yours too.

Did you really go from long hair to that short?  Do you feel that you miss your hair?  Do you still feel feminine?  (I'm worried about that if I decide to cut my hair)

My short hair is found to be just as special and beautiful as when worn long Anne. Femininity is personally believed to come from within and consequently the length of one's hair is not personally seen as important as it is to others.

I feel just as girly and take great pride in my new short hair. Such a change needs to be for the right reasons however and a choice made by you and you only.

Its good to hear you got a cut your happy with. And although I adore long hair I have to agree. Your hair length doesnt deem whether you are feminine or not.I'm am shaved bald right now.But I still look very feminine. And my super girly personality leaves no doubt in anyones mind I am 100% female.

Hi , as a barber / stylist I had a client that did close to the same. Nothing wrong with short hair. I had just cut my wifes hair from a chin length bob to a longer version of a flattop.I did not want her to cut it but if I did not she would have someone else do it. Don't be afraid . She told me it will grow back. Won't it?
