Dear Kristin,
First think about your dress. What style is it? If you have a gorgeous beaded front or a low strappy back that you want to show off, then consider wearing your hair in such a way as to avoid covering up the beautiful details on the dress.
If you dress is simple and you don't care so much about showing up the front or back, you can have more options with your hair.
The second thing to think about is your comfort level. Have you ever worn an updo before? If so, did you enjoy it or did you feel uncomfortable? So many people think that an updo is right for them but then they get one and it doesn't work for them.
The last thing to think about is whether you are doing the style yourself at home or if you are going to the salon. If you are doing the style yourself, select one that is easy for you to do like a half up/half down style or a jazzed up ponytail or braids.
If you are having it done at the salon, you can flip through fashion magazines and select styles that you think are complimentary to your dress and your personality and then show them to your hairstylist for feedback.
To minimize a round face consider wearing a side sweep of bangs or the hot new textured short bangs that end about 1/2 to 1 inch about your eyebrows.
You can also leave some longer strands free along your faceline to minimize cheeks and of course make sure that the top of your style is not too high or it adds fullness.
