The hair an inch or two above my shoulders is fairly thick.  However, the six inches or so below that point is thin and wispy and doesn't look so good.  I know this is a long hair support forum, but just to let you know, I'm trying to decide whether or not I need to cut my hair (not ultra short at all, but just several inches).  Besides cutting, what can I do about the thinner-looking part of my hair?  I think if it looked thicker, I might not have so much pressure to cut my hair.

It's up to you, really. Some of us have "wispy" ends but we call them "fairytale" ends because princes and princesses didn't trim their hair straight across, did they! Wink

The ends are just due to the different growth rates of your hair strands. If you don't like the wispiness though you can always trim a little bit at a time until the slower strands have caught up with the growth of the faster ones.

Mine was wispy on the ends, and I kind of liked the way it looked because the ends started to form ringlets on humid days.  But these ends had a lot splits, and the rate of splitting did not slow down with good care (I used to not be very nice to my hair).  Anyway, I thought it was thin for 2-4 inches and that much would need to come off to thicken up the ends, but then I trimmed one inch and it made a huge difference!  More of a difference visually than I would have expected.  So, I am with Anais Satin -- if you can't live with the ends just trim a little at a time.

Hi Anne,

Sometimes, we are more critical of the way our hair looks, than other people objectively are.  So it may look better than you think it does.

Has your hair been growing longer lately?  Or has it been about the same length for a year or more?

Also, have you changed your haircare routine in any ways that may positively affect the condition or fallout rate?  Because if so, the situation may well improve as time passes.

You may still want to trim your hair.  Oftentimes, someone's hair will look better by trimming less than the total amount they originally contemplated.  I would suggest trimming an inch or two at a time, and seeing if you like it at the new length.  It's always easier to trim hair off, than it is to glue it back on. Wink

HTH.

Hi Dave, you are not going to believe me when I tell you this.  I just returned from the salon (obviously the only one open on a Sunday, Great Clips), and I am very pleased!  I told them and really stressed that I wanted two inches taken off.  I thought that would be a good amount, because it wouldn't be major, yet it would be more than a minor trim.  They did exactly what I wanted, and the ends aren't quite as thick as I hoped, but they're a lot better!  I'll just wait awhile now and maybe in a month or six weeks will go just two more inches, or maybe not!  But, I feel good about what I did.  It wasn't drastic, but it did make a difference.  Thanks for all your support!

Hi Anne...I recently had my first trim in 9 months for the same reason as you....thin and wispy ends.  I am so much happier that I had that inch cut off now :)  I think that if you are really unhappy with the way your hair is looking, then take steps to rectify it.   Hair is to be enjoyed!!Big smile

Anne - so happy to hear you are satisfied with your salon visit a couple of days ago!

I agree with Rini -- each person should decide for themselves what's more important during a grow-out - more saved growth (but uneven ends), or less saved growth (but more even ends).  Some are happiest with one choice, others with the other.  Uh.. that's a wordy way of repeating what Rini said.  Smile

P.S. to rhpetunia - your avatar photo looks familiar.  Have I seen it somewhere else? Wink
