My hair is a little overprocessed from bleaching. I am trying to go back to my natural again but no color with stick. It keeps fading. Anyone know of a good product that won't ruin my hair any more than it already is, that will hold a light/medium brown?

go to sally's and get a protien filler (ask them if you don't know what it is, thy're usually in tiny bottles and hard to find) from what i understand, they basically "fill" up your porous hair, and give the color something to bind to. then color your hair, use a demi-permanant, cuz they're not as damaging and are deposit only, which is all you need for going darker. Also, when you have porous hair, they acually stick better! Colorgems is a good one for long-lastingness, and its quite gentle, but make sure you are careful when picking a color, cuz they tend to run dark, from what i've heard. (in my own expierience w/ thier reds, they don't.)

Regarding the demi-permanent, that's what I have been using (to keep the damage minimal) but they wash out and I am left with the blonde again. (I've been using Clairol Natural Instinct Light Brown). I LVOE the color when I first dye it, but then it washes out quite fast. I will definately try the Colorgems. I have a box of Revlon permanent in light brown, but have been scared to try it in fear of more damage. Is the Colorgems located at Sally??

That's what I thought as well, so I used the semi perm to minimize damage. Unfortunately, it has washed out. Now I am a brown, reddish, blondish color with dark roots. The Light Brown semi perm does turn out darker than expected....more of a medium brown (at first) and I love it. I had actually considered using a medium brown perm, but after the advice on this site, I am afraid that it will end up black.
Do you know of a good perm BOX brand that is non-damaging? I have the Revlon stuff but have been afraid to use it for fear of more damage.

Generally, boxed dyes will come out a level darker and since you are light, using a color a level lighter than what you want is smart. ^__^ But, I have been unsuccessful in finding a boxed dye in any grocery store that doesn't make my hair feel and look like poo. Can you get to a Sally Beauty Supply? If so, there is a permanent brand there, their Loreal Preference, which is a more pro dye, so it isn't as damaging as the boxed stuff and you can pick out the level of developer, a 10 should be fine if you only want to add color, then try a 20 if it fades out badly. I used it once from Sally's and my hair actually felt softer. I dunno. If you really want good stuff, people on eBay sell redken hair dye, but if you don't know much about mixing the developer and dyes or dye levels and bases it may be best to avoid the eBay route, the people in Sally's can definitely help sometimes, mine is full of retired hair stylists, hopefully yours is the same.

I know NOTHING about mixing the dyes, developers, etc. I am right by a few Sally's, but I don't know what to buy, and even if I lucked out and got the right thing, I'd probably screw up the mixing. 
When I first dyed my hair, it turned orange, copper...all the bad colors you can imagine. I finally went to Sally's and got this bleach stuff...OMG...it did a number on my hair, but low-and-behold I finally ended up the nice blonde that I wanted after using a boxed color on my "straw". Now I am just tired of roots and want my normal color back, even a shade darker would be fine. NO ROOTS is my goal. haha

| yeah, I definitely understand. I think the preference is a 1 to 1 ratio so it is'nt hard to mix. Just get a color beaker, Sally's has those too. The preference comes in a 2 oz tube, then you mix in 2 oz of developer into a bottle or a bowl (whichever you use) and add in a protein filler, maybe a brown based protein filler (I think someone mentioned this). Just ask the people, tell them what you want, since they can see you they will probably be better. Just avoid the young people, as they don't tend to know much in my experience. |

Thank you for your help! I'll check out Sally and let you know what happens!! I am just so skeptical of Sally and doing this on my own because there are a lot of young girls working in there that don't know what they are doing. <:(
I actually went to a Cost Cutters and they wouldn't touch my hair with a color. They wacked most of it off (I have hair down to my rear) by layering the snot out of it and gave me some Redken damage repair stuff. So far it is in better condition, that's why I used the Natural Instinct semi-perm stuff. It didn't damage it at all, surprisingly. Anyway, now it's just a matter of getting it to STICK and not fade, without damage. Hopefully this preference will do the trick. Is there amonia or peroxide in that stuff???

| What Redken repair stuff? Redken is heaven. If you really want to get the color to stay, I should have mentioned Aveda products! They have a bunch of color depositing conditioners that work so very well, I'd suggest finding an Aveda salon and buying some, I used it on my dyed copper hair, ever since I started, barely fades. Uhm, the preference has peroxide, I don't know about ammonia, not all permanent dyes have it, you should check the bottle though if you are against this, I'm not sure what difference it makes, Herbal Essence doesn't have ammonia yet it fried my hair. I'd just use a 10 vol developer then (this is the peroxide formula, and there is peroxide in all dyes except temporary or level 1 dyes, Natural Instincts has it even I believe, just in a low formula, 10 should be a little higher). |

| Oh and you could try the Color Gems, but since you are having problems with demi permanent dyes it may just be a waste also. I do think you definitely need a protein filler added into the dye and the other thing I forgot is when you dye your hair, don't use these protein treatments all the time, they make your color fade faster. I'd switch to one of the Redken Moisture lines and use the Aveda color conditioner and once a week use the protein treatments (if it is something from the Redken Extreme line) |
