Hi..
My hair is about neck length and it has been like that pretty much all my life. It grows to a certain length and then it starts to break off. I have tried pretty much everything and my hair refuses to grow any longer. my scalp seems like it is really dry. I wash it once a week and deep condition it because I normally have really bad dandruff. Every night I use " always 911 leave in conditioner" and in the mornings I use " ic moisterizer"  At times I even oil my scalp with " dax" a light weight hair grease. I normally get my relaxers every 4-5 weeks because if i dont my hair starts to shed really badly. I also normally get my ends clipped every other relaxer or so.
I wear my hair wrapped so mostly I have to flat iron it at least twice a week.

Please let me know what I have to do to get fast hair growth.

Crymy hair went from 9-11 inches to 2-3 inches....HELP!!!!
i am half asian, half afro american and my hair seemed to never grow past my mid shoulders.
i thought that was bad, now i have hair up to my neck because i started wearing quickweaves and being lazy about it.  i would wash my hair, not dry it but tie it up in rubber bands and stuff it under the wig piece.  that along with a little bit of stress and harshness when brushing my hair has broken my hair completely off.
then of course my mother was balding/thinnin at the top of her head before she passed away in 2000 at the age of 55 so what did i expect?  i became scared when i noticed that my hair was falling out in long pieces by the brushfuls when i would wash or comb my hair when i lived in the mountains using harsh water diluted with major iron (orange staining water) for several months.  now i feel i have no choice but to wear hair pieces and wigs.
any advice on how to grow my hair back being that i abused it so badly????  also, the combs in the wig pieces have left my hair WAY thin around the entire hairline.

Pumkin....you should try stretching your relaxers more.  Four to five weeks is a lot and I'm sure it is contributing to your breakage.  There are lots of ways to stretch your relaxers.  You will have to do some searches and ask some of the girls.  Your heat use should be cut down also, once you do this your hair will grow so much better.  First try using heat once a week and work your way up to longer.  Moisturizing daily or every other day is also very important.  You'll need a creamy water based moisturizer w/ no mineral oil or petroleum, then seal your moisture in w/ a light oil such as olive or coconut oil.

Do your ends look like they need clipping every other relaxer?  If they don't I would suggest leaving them alone because by trimming so frequently you're trimming away your length.  Find yourself some good lighting and check your ends for splits or damage before you trim.....but don't get me wrong, trimming is good so don't stop doing it altogether.....just when needed. HTH

Thank you very much for responding. My hair stylist told me to do the perms every four weeks ( but he could be wrong). As far as my ends they normally look like they need to be trimmed to me, but honestly I just go by weather or not my hair is laying right. So I sure will try what you said. Do you think that the vitamins I take could help.. I was taking some hair skin and nail vitamins. which really helped my nails but I did not see much of a difference with my hair. today I went and got some biotin vitamins. Do you think they will work well for hair growth also?

To Pumkin, I agree with Pokahontas. Unless your hair grows really fast you should wait until you have a significant amount of new growth before relaxing. Also with your ends it's good to oil them everyday or every other day. That reduces the amount of times to need to trim.  Not to mention moisturized your hair at least once a day. I also have a perm and taking care of your hair regulary makes a difference and reduces the amount of breakage.

do you have any type of suggestion on what type of moisterizer I should be using? I have been using " ic moisterizer" every morning. Is that alright or should i be using something that would help my hair to grow faster.. because of coarse it does not grow fast at all.  Is there some sort of hair program that I should be on?

You can try mane &tail conditioner because it makes the hair grow fuller and faster. I agree with everyone when they say you should stretch out your relaxer because if the hair becomes overprocessed then it gets brittle and breaks off. Trust me, I had the same problem!

Don't concentrate so much on growing your hair fast but concentrate on having healthy hair. You shouldn't flat iron your hair twice a week because excessive heat is also a contributing factor. Use something that's light and won't weigh your hair down concentrating on your ends because one the ends split then you have to get it trimmed. I know I'm definitely learning not to rush the process of growing hair faster. I make sure I'm taking care of my hair as it grows.

4-5 WEEKS?? Wow....ummm...I think you should strecth your relaxers to about 2 MONTHS. Relaxers won't help your hair stop shedding and if you don't get any NG, then why are you relaxing? Also, do you overlap relaxers...? Your hair may be overprocessed

moisturise daily and dont manipulate your hair too much. keep it in a bun (not too tight) or you can try the baggiemethod. ask around for protective styles too

Sapphire- first of all, i am sorry that you are going thru this. You are gonna have to take care of your hair. First of all, i am gonna reccommend that you leave all chemicals and heat alone (unless it is a hooded dryer for the express purpose of doing a deep conditioning or a pre-poo). Do daily cowashes (like washing the hair with conditioner), rinse and apply a good leave in (infusium 23 frizz control , leavein, aussie hair insurance or surge 14 plus hair revitalizer), fingerstyle with your hands. Let your hair dry then apply your wig or hair piece. At nite oil your ends and scalp with olive oil, coconut oil, palm oil , safflower oil or vitamin e oil. Put a thin plastic cap on top and a satin scarf on top of that. Also pre-poo your hair with castor oil overnite on the nite before shampooing. Shampoo weekly, deep condition for 45-60 mins with lamaur bone marrow or cholesterol. Start taking vitamins as well(shen min, biotin, msm, flaxseed oil, evening primrose oil, vitamin b-complex, hair skin and nails vitamins and vitamin e-drink lots of water with these). Also try using Jherri Rhedding 100% natural protein conditioner every 4-6 weeks (mix this in with your deep conditioner) this will combat breakage and strengthen your hair. Any other questions, please feel free to ask but sweetie i would also adviseleave the wigs and hair pieces alone because they are drying your hair and scalp out further compounding your problem(try learning how to wrap your hair with silk or satin instead). Instead of using commercial shampoo you may want to try using castile soap- it works great on my natural hair. Check out this website and see if a bottle of this might help you. It is all natural and very moisturizing/softening to my hair- http://www.drwoodsproducts.com - www.drwoodsproducts.com   In terms of reg. conditioners- make sure that they are moisturizing - trader joe's has some good ones, so does alberto vo5 and aussie is great as well.

Yeah stylists tend to say that a lot.  They pretty much just want you to come back as often as possible so they can get paid.

The vitamins you're taking are good.  Biotin and Flaxseed oil are very good for hair.  If you reduce the chemicals and heat and concentrate on the health of your hair it will grow.  Try to find some no heat styles such as wet wraps, roller sets, and braid-outs.

I'm not too familiar w/ the IC moisturizer you're using.  Have you heard of Cantu?  That is a good one that you might like.  Make sure you're really babying your ends, that way you won't need to trim as much.  Castor oil is good to put on your ends and helps them not to split.  Once you get your ends healthy you will be able to go longer between trims.  HTH

I thank everyone for all the comments.. but How do I stretch perms, and what is the baggie method? and what do you mean by.. overlapping relaxers? I normally feel like I need a relaxer because of the syle that I normally wear my hair in.. it is always in a flat wrap.. so after a while it starts to look really nappy. my hair is only almost shoulder lenghth so, to me it does not really seem like it is that many styles that I can put it in.. sometimes I wear a draw string pony tail but wouldnt that be stressful? Do you have any ideas of some stress free styles for my lenghth?
I have never heard of cantu but that is one that I may have to try.

I only relax my superkinky non-mixed African hair TWICE A YEAR.

I wouldn't even waste my time with a stylist who wants me in once a month.

Well....about your hairstyle.....

you can either get the hairstyle you want (that apparently doesn't work for your hair type, or you wouldn't be working against its natural texture) or you can get healthy hair.

Not every style works for every hair type. If you find that you have to do a lot of damaging things to your hair to get a certain style, maybe you should try a style that works with your hair type and that uses your hair type as a strength. For instance, not everyone can have Nia Long's hairstyle. My hair is too heavy and won't be light and fluffy like hers. My hair looks more like a "bowl" haircut when I tried. I can put lots of hairspray on it and gel, and a curling iron.......or I can find a style more suitable for heavy, coarse hair......

Just a suggestion.
