i dyed my hair med brwn 2 months ago although it still looks a little on the dark side. i want to dye my hair a shade of red. maybe an auburn or so.. i was wondering how i may achieve an even dye job by doing it on my own (preferably) or what to ask for or tell a haircolorist. by the way i have some white hair. thanks alot in advance.

Red is really hard-- professional colorists will be very hesitant to put any red in hair, because it fades really quickly and looks orangy. I've been red for a year and it's a mess-- have to touch up all the time, and it never matches quite right when I do, etc.
But anyway, if you go for it, I'd ask for some killer red highlights. They won't be as hard to maintain but you'll get a good look from it, interesting and sexy. There are several good highlight kits out there and they've started making red tints, or you can get a cap and use an all over to do highlights. Maybe even use two different colors of the same brand.
Also, I'd try a demi perm to start, so that as it starts growing out it will still look ok and will gradually fade and not look too weird. It's an idea, anyway. I'm currently trying to get rid of red and it's a big huge horrible mess, so I guess I'd advise against going all over red if you possibly can. It might look cool for a few weeks but the lasting headache is kind of annoying.

I'd strongly suggest going to a professional - someone who is very experienced with coloring. Make sure you advise the colorist when you make the appointment that your hair has been previously dyed. Depending on the color you want, the existing dye will most likely need to be removed first. This step takes extra time and can get expensive.
Reds are difficult, but not impossible. The more experienced the colorist, the happier you will be with the results.
If you decide to do something on your own, I urge you NOT to dye over your existing color. You will end up with hair that is darker than you intended, particularly at the ends. You should use a color remover (like Color Fix) first. I'd also suggest a porosity treatment and deep condititioning to prevent "yucky" color absorption on the ends. The ends will not need to process as long as the roots-to-mid-shaft. The ends will probably only need about 10 minutes or so. You'd have to really keep and eye on it... and remember to ALWAYS do a strand test first.
Also - I have found red doesn't fade "as much" when used with a vol 30 developer (rather than vol 20).
