Well, I did it. I went to the hairdresser for the first time since Thanksgiving. Sadly, I had too much new growth to use the rest of the Phytorelaxer ($30 down the drain!  ) and she used Motions instead. After a wash and a douse with setting lotion, she set me under a cap dryer to let the roots straighten out.
This is the part that really surprised me. I looked at my hair in the mirror after the drying. While the roots were straight and slick, the rest of my hair was a pronounced S-curl. I asked the hairdresser if that was my hair's natural state and she said "Yes. And if your hair can stay on your head with no breakage and no noticeable damage for six months post-relaxer, you don't need one."
So! First off, I think that's a wonderful thing to hear from a hairdresser. How many people would willingly tell a client that they don't need to give them money anymore?
 But secondly, that means carefully transitioning. My original hair goals had been bra-strap length by the end of this year and waist-length a year after that, but now I have to give TLC to the relaxed bits while giving the new growth a chance to take hold. Seven months to see what happens!  I don't intend to do a big chop unless it becomes absolutely necessary. And between my obsession with fragile ends and my hairdresser's careful trims, I probably shouldn't need one. My question to you ladies who have gone the "processed-to-natural" route is, how did you baby your hair to make the transition as smooth as possible? ------------- Make every day you have count, before the time comes for you to count every day you have. |

Well I've been Transitioning for a good while now.
What makes the process easier for me is a simple and effective regimen.
Co Washes
Deep Conditioning
Moisturizing often
Protective Styles
Little to no Heat
My regimen has been working well for me thus far, and my Transition is still going smoothly.
Once you find the proper products that work for your hair, the Transitioning process will become a bit easier for you.

Well, I do most of that (CO washing didn't work out so well ... ditto "little/no heat". I NEED my flat iron. ), so I guess I'll check out the link you gave me and look into ways to work a "crimp" into "waves." Those that flat iron...what do you use to keep the hair from reverting? Do you use a pressing oil or curling wax to press the hair? Hey panama if you look at a bottle of condish and if any of the ingredients end in cone or xane you don't want to use it to conwash with because those ingredients are I think (if i am wrong someone pls correct me ) silicones that coat the hair. I use kenra moisturizing condish (you can find it at Trade Secrets)that is cone-free or you can use any organic/natural condish Trader Joes and any organic food store will carry condish that do not have those cones. Oh, that helps ALOT!!! So when you cone-wash do you leave it in for a certain amount of time or do you just you rinse, dry, and style hair as normal or do u regular wash after that? Sorry for all the questions but i'm new to this and really want to try it and do it right.

Hey Panama no problem....I do the C&G method of washing my hair - http://www.groafrohairlong.com which entails dividing your hair into 4 sections and washing each section separately to avoid tangles. I put condish on dry hair and braid the 4 sections then coat the braids again with either more con or honey let it sit for 15-20min with a plastic cap and then rinse. No shampoo after just style as normal or airdry.

you use the conditioner as a shampoo and massage into scalp. Make sure
that you rinse well to not caot the scalp...another reason not to use
silicone conditioners because it causes build-up that conditioner does
not rinse out. You need shampoo for that.

 when condition washing or condition only-(no'poo or no shampoo) try to use a conditioner that gives great slippage,i.e it will give your hair a slipperry feeling to be able to detangle if need be.
**I use Kirkland in a big bottle, it is blue in color, very light and can be use as a leave in. This is a hawaiian ginger root based product with lemon complex from costco.
** I also like suave light daily clarifying conditioner, another big bottle that smells like spices (if ya like) great slippage, i apply to dry hair use crown and glory method to comb and detangle.
PYNK, youll find products that you love just follow the guidlines that the ladies gave earlier. When you log into the forum they are sections for newbies on styling techniques, and how to start your regime etc. Good luck.

sorry for taking so long to ans. the name of the shampoo/conditioner is kirkland signature in big white bottles, you wont miss them. the conditioner has ginger root in it and the shampoo smells like coconuts.
