My hair has grown in beautifully since i stopped perming but the degree of volume im getting if i dont flat iron just isnt cute,, i mean my hair is HUGE and then some once it dries ( and dry and hard),, i mean its like some kind of other being on top of my head LOL and one i dont plan to show to the outside world ,, and the really bad thing is its HALF CURLY HALF FRIZZY STRAIGHT so its HIDEOUS LOL,, its scaring me and i have tried oils and other things and they will not tame it,, i mean even with a perm I had the same problem!! Once its ironed its pure silk and sometimes TOO flat,, how can that be?? Can anyone think of anything that can define and soften the hair and keep it moisturized when i dont iron ,,,or am i doing something wrong when i wash it??

Have you tried air drying the hair wearing a wave or strecth cap. These caps help to flatten the roots.

Wild grow oils helps to soften root.

My hair is the same way. Very curly when natural and when I iron it's almost too flat.
S-curl is really good for moisturizing and softening when you don't iron. Omg, I love that stuff! It truly makes me feel like I have a whole nother head of hair.

Another thing you might try is ironing larger sections than usual; that should give you more volume because you won't be able to get the roots quite as flat.

I a similar problem. When I flat iron myself, I can't get the roots that straight. I also only use medium heat. I use a 1" tourmaline/ceramic that can get to 415 degrees! OUCH. Should I blow dry more first, or what? What is everyone else's technique.

How are you drying your hair before flat ironing? This plays a very important part in getting your roots straight. I usually air-dry in two ponytails and tie a scarf on. This way my roots are already somewhat straight. When flat-ironing I take each section and pull it up or out from my head making sure it's pulled taught and then flat iron that way. This usually gets my roots perfect.

Poki, I've tried air drying and then flat ironing, but that's even worse. I use a ceramic/tourmaline dryer and iron and a ceramic brush (maybe I'm ceramic crazy) but I want to be safe.

Thanks cookie. I didn't know you were at lhcf. No I didn't get layers but my hair in the front (where my bangs used to be) is cut shorter so it kinda looks like it. I'm terrified to get long layers but I want them. Everyone on hair boards seem to always advise against it. They say it makes the hair look thinner and they are hard to grow out. I think they are cute.
Yeah, the s-curl is great. I put it on wet hair and then let it air-dry. It is unbeleivably soft when it dries! It's made by Luster's in a white pump bottle with blue writing. It says "No drip" on the front. I got mine at Wal-Mart.

OHH ok its lusters,, i may have seen it b4 ,, im gonna go look for it,, and im actually not on LHCF,, i just read them fairly often but i cant join cuz my dumb mac cp again isnt compatible to sign up ,,, Oh and the layers,, Hmmm thats curiuous, i have seen that too, that ppl say it makes the hair look thin but im trying to figure out how and why,, my hair looks like its in layers though they were never cut simply becuz the front is catching up slower than the back but i really like layered hair esp on ppl whos hair is reallly straight and long
