I am a natural red head and I would like to go to a cool color blonde. My skin tone is very fair and I look better in silver so I think I am a cool skin tone. My problem is when I bleach test swatches of my hair I cant get pale yellow. My test swatches took 3 hours to get to an awful banana type color. (Born Blonde Bleach< 3 activator packets, 20 vol. peroxide)
My question is : 1 Is three hours too long to have bleach on your hair? 2.Could I bleach twice? Once one week then lots of conditioning treatments, then bleach again 2 weeks later. Or should I just apply heat to speed things along a little. I am half Italian so my hair is pretty strong and coarse. I tried to tone the test swatches after I bleached them with a toner (Revlon 10 ultimate natural blonde and it got a little lighter but had way too much yellow in it)
The yellow makes my skin look bad but when I hold up a test swatch of hair with no yellow in it it looks really good. How do I get this yellow out?? I held up a swatch of Loreal #100 very light natural blonde which had no yellow in it and it looked great. I am fully comitted to being blonde and once I get the color right I may take the swatch in to the colorist with me but I want to get the right shade at home first. How do I get this yellow out??

Dear Gina75: You don't mention what level your natural red hair color is. I am assuming it must be in the range of 3-4-5. If you are getting to the banana yellow stage it might be as light as you will get at the mooment. If you overdo the bleaching you will definately ruin your hair. Applying heat may help but you would have to be extremely careful not to overprocess your hair.
Perhaps reconditioning treatments and then another try with bleach may lighten it further. I am recommending that you go to a salon to finish the job. It may cost some money but then the salon will determine if you can get to a pale yellow stage.
Other than that you might try to tone your hair with a blue violet based toner. It would make your hair a softer, neutral blonde that you might be able to live with.
Going to see a professional is really the smartest thing to do.
Good luck,
Forest
