I have moderately thick asian hair(it doesn't curl) and I have trouble having it staying spiked up for more than 20 mins.  After taht it just basically moves from ti's position and slowly begins to spike in odd directions, from where it was.

The method I used was by blow drying my hair upwards and the products I used were got2b cement hair-spray and they're putty.  I didn't use a ridiculous amount of putty, but I used a fair bit of hairspray in an attempt to keep it up, since this isn't hte first time I've tried to keep it up. 

I'm trying to not move on to the expensive salon products, but it almost feels like I'm going to have to on this one.  I guess I'll save that as a last resort.  But perhaps I can try buying a new blow dryer first.  Since I think that's the more important part of it, seeing as how the products I use should be holding.  Any suggestions?

The method I used when I had short, spiky hair was to put a huuuge handful of extra-hold mousse into about 50% dry hair, then blowdry upside down. This gives the hair some 'grip' makes it not so slippery. Then I used about a tablespoon of molding cream/putty to make the spikes, and when i was happy with them I sprayed with extra-hold hairspray.
I didn't use any expensive brands, I think I used mostly Herbal essences and Aussie products.
Might not work for you as it did for me, but it's worth a shot.
