i went to a street fair today...and i hate to say this ladies..but when i have to walk past young african american females/males, i have to get ready for the onslaught of ridicule..

I wear hiking boots,  baggy jeans, open, oversized shirts with tank tops underneath..i am a mountainhiker, motorcyle rider, sky diver, bodybuilder, dabble in martial arts, avid bookworm, and am taking up golf..

i like my hair in a carefree spiral style with a part down the middle (which my beautician helps maintain every two weeks..sometimes we use extensions for fullness, and sometimes we don't bother..it's shoulder length now, which took years to grow back).

This young african american couple was coming toward me..the male was staring...his girlfriend "caught" him, and crossed her arms...he looked at her and grinned and said "Do you want your hair to look like that?"  she gave me this disdainful look up and down and said "NO!"  and they both laughed out loud (especially in my head)...and kept walking past..

i like my hairstyle...it's low maintenance, and suits my personality...but what i don't understand is the "ridiculing" or "is that a weave?" or "is that her hair?"

ITA with Pokahontas and KeishaNSU!! Some people always want to judge but never look at themselves. If we as people did that, the world would be much different.

i am so sorry that this happened to you. Unfortunately the couple that you encountered are not enlightened as to their true heritage and beauty- therefore they are just plain ignorant - but there was not need to be evil on top of that.

thanks ladies..i just don't get it sometimes...i've been in civil rights marches, not allowed to eat in public places, banned from theaters..growing up in the midwest back in the early sixties was tough!!  being a halfbred black-indian/cajun was even worse!!  Everyone hated us..

What was worse, we half-breeds had to beg the african americans to let us march with them..they didn't consider us "black"...if we were allowed to march, we were beaten, chased down, and threatened just as bad - if not worse..by the police..sometimes, the KKK "helped out"...

I sat watching how all minorities put each other down in the media, everyday life...especially in music  (calling their women "bitches" and "hoes")...exploiting their beautiful women (Big Pimpin')...and wonder, what did i even fight for?

And here came these two..if it weren't for thousands of  people like myself - they wouldn't be able to walk around freely, have chances to go to college, and have careers...and that's the thanks i got...Wacko

That was awfully rude.  But, sometimes people can be so cruel and ignorant.  I know that it is easier said than done, but these type of people are not worth your time.

I don't understand why idjets have to do that. Just rude to be rude. Noone ever taught them manners I guess. They don't even realize how closed minded and ignorant the appear to others.

Sorry that happened to you.

What's worse, they don't even care...i have to laugh when i think back on how my indian mother raised us..."I don't care HOW you feel about whatever is going on around you, you damn well better not embarrass me in public"...(that was something she drummed in our heads)

When  other people make fools of themselves in public, people laugh..when minorities make fools of themselves...it's expected..

I'm sorry this happened to you...this day and time a lot of 'youngins' have no respect, manners, nothing and its SAD...I just laugh at them because they are the ones who will have a hard life. Just ignore them...it's hard but at least your doing what YOU want to do and not following the crowd.

LAWD HAVE MERCY! I would think people would be more refined than that! I mean after years of having been demeaned as a people for years you would think we would be over outer appearences as a measurement for respect. Keep ya head up lady ..maybe there's some insecurity issues that those people have with THEMSELVES and if that's the case realize that it can't possibly be YOUR fault because you've fully accepted yourself . They are probably envious that they aren't as comfortable in their skin as you.

well i gotta say ignorance is still the #1 offender in society today. doesn't matter how you look, who you are, what you do. you will still hear some ridiculous things. big boned people get ridiculed, big breasted women get ridiculed, yet alot of people wish they had them. i say do your thing cause that;s what makes you who you are. however, something tells me that she may have been jealous of your hair. and did it occur to you, that he better laugh with her or he might find himself in a heated spat!

well dressed and looking great also gets ridiculed. so i agree with blackblondegrl ----- um... lol
