A skilled hairdresser can cut one, very carefully designed, long "layer" if you want to call it that..or a "wedge" of hair...which others may call it, that blends into the rest of the long hair's length but it is curl right around the hairline in the front.  It is usually cut with a fringe/bangs although it doesn't have to be.

 

When my hair gets a little longer, I'd very much like to try this.  I think one of the problems I had when my hair was a little longer was that I really did need more movement around my face.  Obviously, all-around short hair will do that, but I want the effect without the all-over short hair!!

 

I have two questions about the wedge.  One, if I looked at someone with a wedge cut, and I didn't know that it was cut into a wedge, would the wedge be apparent to me?  Second, there is no way I'd try this on myself!  But I do know someone who is a stylist who is skilled who probably can.  I'd actually like to print out Karen's comments (if she doesn't mind) and show him when I ask for one, but is there anything else I should mention to the stylist?  I'm just not sure what to ask for.  I do NOT want traditional "layers."  I'm thinking that probably in December or January I would like to do this.  My hair right now is "just" below the shoulders.  In six more months, there will be some nice length, but that's when I'd really like the wedge around my face.

When I had a stylist cut my hair, they had a tendency to cut the 'wedge' (or pie-shaped section)  from either sides of my front bangs all the way to the back top of my head.  I modified it and only take it more towards to center top.  Not sure if one can tell a wedge cut other than that I can have bangs if I want.  But they are not a 'fringe' which implies to me a thin section straight across the forehead.  With a wedge cut, you can  have something of a layers illusion. 

 

I like this cut because it gives you more styling options and a more lift to your hair.  I realize that flat hair is still in fashion, but I never really cared for that look.  I prefer fluff, bounce, and fullness.  And I get more height out of my hair.

 

Not sure what you mean by cutting a wedge around the entire face though.

Thanks Tyranna, for your reply.  I think what I'm trying to grasp at this point is exactly how the hair is cut.

 

I've seen people get highlights, and the very straight narrow end of a special comb kind of weaves in and out of a section of hair and that hair is highlighted.  For some reason, since the "wedge" is not visably seen, I tend to think that's how the hair is cut, but I may be wrong.  Let's say you are getting a wedge now.  How does the person cutting it decide what to cut?  I know you said pie-shaped but is it just random hairs?  Is the hair for the wedge take from underneath the top layer of hair?  I'm sorry to sound so ignorant, but I've never heard of this, but it sounds like something I really need to know!  When my hair gets a little longer, I want to try it, but I also want to know exactly what to tell my stylist so we're speaking the same language.

 

I tried to find an article or a picture of how it's being cut on the website, but couldn't.  Do you know if there's any more information about it here?

 

When I said I wanted a wedge around the face, I just meant that the back of my hair, when longer, isn't as critical for body and bounce.
