OK quickly here we go....
Haircolor doesn't matter how damaging it is to someone's hair regardless of starting and ending color. Anytime a chemical service is done on hair whether it's color, relaxer, or a perm it raises the natural PH of hair from 4.5-5.5 (normal) to 8.5 or higher. It pulls moisture from the hair strands and eventually the hair becomes brittle, dry, looses elasticity and breaks off.
The key to maintaining good overall health for healthy, shiny hair is using the proper products to help re-balance the PH of that hair.
When coloring your hair you should color your regrowth or untinted hair. When you color your hair you are weaking approximately 5% of the bonds in the hair that give the hair strength and elasticity. If you happen to continue to color your hair and don't do just the regrowth and pull the rest of the color through the hair you will continue to weaken more bonds in that strand of hair....eventually resulting in brittle, dry hair or even breakage. If you are doing a root retouch and you want to refresh your mid-shafts to ends to refresh the color you should use the same haircolor level and tone in a Semi-Permanent color instead of pulling the whole color thru the head further damaging the hairstrand.
Also for better overall health use a Moisturizing Shampoo and stay away from commercial crap like Pantene, Pert Plus, Thermasilk and stuff like that as it creates shine in the hair by coating the hair with a wax which creates a waxy buildup on the hairstrands. The waxy buildup actually prevents conditioners from penetrating the hairstrands and doing their job to help restore moisture to the hair strands.
If you color your hair use a shampoo for color treated or chemically treated hair it's more mild on your hair. Also a leave in conditioner on your hair especially if you flat iron or or blow dry your hair as well as a thermal protectant to protect the hair strands from the heat will also help improve the hair's overall condition.
Unfortunately when your hair is damaged the only thing you can do is use conditioners and products to make the hair managable until the damage grows out and can be cut off. Damaged hair cannot be repaired. If you want a good deep conditioning treatment done professionally in a salon seek out a Goldwell Salon and ask if they offer L'ANZA's 5 Step Deep Conditioning Treatment it should cost $20-$25 and it's well worth the money....it is the best thing you can do for damaged, stressed out, pverprocessed hair.
