This is the first time I will be coloring my hair
in any way. The only chemical alteration I have
ever had done are perms (last one was over a year ago).
I only want to add highlights. I love how it looks on other women, but I am petrified of doing something awful to my hair that is irreversible. I have a shoulder-length face frame cut with bangs, and my hair is medium to dark brown. I know that I shoud get it done at a salon, but I would prefer to do it at home with some help. I bought "Revlon Colorstay Contrasts Highlighting-Light Brown Highlights." It says right on the box,"Great on Dark brown hair." My sister had auburn highlights done at a salon and you couldn't even see a difference, and she paid $100.
Some specific questions:
*How do I ensure that my bangs are done evenly if they are stuffed inside the cap?
*Any particular way to "tuck hair around hairline under the cap"?
*Is it possible highlights will be too orange or yellow"?
Any help would be appreciated.

I have to say that even though your sister had a bad experience, i would still go to a salon. First, the cap method is dangerous-it cna make your scalp bleed and remeber that putting chemicals on an injured scalp can be dangerous. Of course, yopu could skip the cap and just paint on the highlights with a highlighting brush.
Remember that the bleach solution in a highlighting kit is different than a regular bleach that is used on the entire hair. Highlighting bleach is too harsh for the scalp, so it shouldn't be appled to close to the scalp. The color is more white and ash colored than a regular bleach. Sometimes it can look turn out like gray-white hair. I would actually recommend investigating this further. If you want more of a golden colored highlight, you could use a regular bleach and a highlighting brush. The regular bleach is more drippy, though. However, I think highlighting bleach is more damaging to hair.
