Hi

I'm appearing in a play and as my hair is short- and the role requires long hair- i am forced to wear a wig. The wig I have here is perfect for the role except for one thing- it looks awful!!!

It is about 20 years old and acrylic but hasn't been worn much and spent most of the 20 years in a plastic bag in a suitcase in a storage locker.

The wig itself is reddish brown ,just above shoulder length and layered. It is a bit Farrahesque in the front but looks more like the hairstyle that Julie on The Love Boat wore in around 1979-1981, and the hairdo that Treat Williams had in the filn version of Hair - Long at the back with shorter sides. I haven't a clue what the style is called though.

Is there any way that I can get the wig to look better without getting it professionally styled?

At the moment when i wear it i look like as if i stuck my finger in a plug or something
Your help in this matter is greatly appreciated.

One thing you might want to do is give it a gentle wash. Check some wig selling sides on the internet, some of them give tips and tricks.
I found this on one of them, though I'm not sure about the wig shampoo. Since it is an acrylic wig I'm not sure if it makes any difference. But since it is acrylic you want to be REALLY careful with heated styling tools.
Hope this helps,

Brush the wig thoroughly
Add wig shampoo to wash basin and fill with cold water
Let soak for 5 minutes
Swish the wig gently NEVER RUB
Rinse gently in cold clear water twice or until thoroughly rinsed
Drain and blot gently with towel DO NOT SQUEEZE OR WRING
Allow to air dry on a wire wigstand or a slender object like a can of hairspray DO NOT USE HAIRDRYER
Brush wig only when completely dry

There is not only black and white, there is also grey
