My hair refuses to go red!

I've tried Colorfixing and prepigmenting, I've tried bleached test strands, I've tried permanent drugstore brands and semi-permanent professional brands...every single thing makes my hair turn dark brown again when I dye red.

I don't get it.  I know my tips are pretty damn damaged and I'm getting them significantly chopped on Friday (for the first time in a year)...but it is so annoying.  My hair is a god-awful permanent brown colour (nice n easy - not!) and I have naturally light blonde hair so the roots are...horrific to say the least.  My hair has been like this for 10 months.  All I've ever done to it is touch-up my roots and Colorfix twice in these 10 months.  The bleach was used on a test strand, not all my hair, so that doesn't count.  I look after my hair with weekly intensive conditioning and no longer blow-dry it.  I do use straighteners but only on a low heat setting.

My hair is just past shoulder-length but will be grown-out bob length by the end of the week - so any bleach/Colorfix used in the past will be completely gone.  I was hoping to bleach (30vol) after this and dye my hair a deep red because it's what I always wanted (Special Effects semi-perm)...but I don't know if it will work or just go brown again.  I keep hoping that it's just my tips that are so porous they won't take in dye.  It's weird because I put electric blue dye on a bleached strand test and it turned out really well...so it's not just to do with the condition of my hair, it's the colour red itself haha.

Anyone else know an effective way to get red?...I'm currently growing out my brown a bit because the bleach is off-scalp...but I'm getting deperate!!!

Thank you!

It could still be that your hair is too porous so the red is pulling a lot darker than it should.  I had this problem with red after I'd had all virgin hair, then only dyed it red twice, and the third time I redid my red, it went way dark.  After only two regular dye jobs it shouldn't have been that damaged, but the red went to dark brown anyway on the last foot of my ends, but not from the chin up.  I guess 2 dye jobs and that much length was just too much for a good red.  I wore hats and let the brown ends lighten up in the sun and with conditioner use for a couple of weeks until it all matched.  I'd just wait to do red until your hair is all natural.

I can't grow out my blonde - that's my worst case scenario :)

I'll ask the hairdresser on saturday when I get my hair cut and see what she says.

Try L'Oreal Professional Hicolor ( red) that is what the color is called RED. I used it for a couple of years and it was the best red hair color that I had tried and I have tried alot of them.

i had that same problem for a long time, too.  but i recently tried henna (body art quality  hennaforhair.com) and it worked perfectly!!!! :D  since my hair is med brown i have to bleach a bit first, to about orange, and then put henna over that.  IT makes hair a nice bright, realistic red, and can be done as often as you want, since its good for your hair :)
