Well, I was borned here but I grew up in the Dominican Republic, so I can tell you what it is. No, it is not a chemical treatment. Dominicans are known for being able to blow any hair straight and beautifull. Even the kinkiest and nappiest hair. It is all about the technique. Dominican women love straight hair, and since the Dominican Republic is so humid, it is a mision to achieve that. So Dominican hair stylists have become experts at blow drying hair straight.
But like I said before, it is all about the technique. If you got regular curly hair, they will do the regular blow dryer and round brush technique (unless you request otherwise). But if you have African American hair, they put your hair in rolers and sit you under the dryer until your hair is completly dry. When the hair is taken out of the rolers is totally smooth, soft and frizz free. Then they'll take out the waves with the blow dryer and round brush. The result is super smooth, super straigth, shiny hair with tons of body. And hair which will be very healthy as long as you keep using this method.
They will also automatically use this method, if you had any chemical treatment done on that day. If they relaxed, highlighted or colored your hair that day, they will use the rollers technique because is more gentle on the freshly chemically treated hair.
Wrapping hair in rolers is alot less damaging than straight up blow drying it. I remember growing up, that that was the thing if you did not want to get split ends and breakage. And I can tell you it really works.
I'm too lazy to go throug all that now, so whenever I go for a hair cut I'll just get the regular blow out.
So that's the scoop. No special or chemical treatment. But I will tell you though, nobody and I mean NOBODY, blow dryes hair like dominicans. That's why they have become so famous and people who know about it look for dominican stylists. I have walked into beauty supply stores where they have a hair salon on premises, and they will try to get me to book an apointment. When I tell them I already have a hair stylist, they give me the "oh but we have dominican stylists" answer. They know people look for them, and that they are known for being the best at the blow drying thing.
I have curly hair, so my stylist works fine for me. I won't change her cause she is great at cutting hair, and it took me a long time to find someone that good at it. But I have to admit, if it wasn't because she uses a flat iron after blow drying my hair, she would not be able to get it looking as good as she does. When I go to visit my parents in the Dominican Republic, I always go to the Salon. And they can get my hair 3 times straighter than my stylist without using the flat iron.
I still ask them to run the iron down my locks, just because it seals the cuticle. That way the humidity won't ruin my look when I walk out the door. But if it wasn't for that factor, I wouldn't need the iron at all.
