Hello! My colorist uses 30 volume developer to lift my naturally dark brown hair to a medium auburn/red hue. I go for a root touch up every four weeks, and am concerned that the 30v developer may damage my hair over time. Also, is it alright for her to pull the same mixture through to the ends to refresh the color, or is that something that can cause extra damage?

I'm not a pro as you requested, but I'm sure you don't need a pro to
tell you that if they pull 30 vol developer through your hair each
time, its going to add up to damage in the long run. I wouldn't
let them pull it through all your hair unless you felt your color
really needed a brightening. It also may not matter if your hair
is shoulder length or shorter, because the damage would be cut off

She should only be doing the virgin regrowth with 30 vol developer and color and then putting a semi-permanent or demi-permanent of the same tint and level on the previously tinted hair and pulling that thru to refresh the mid shafts to ends with the same color that is deposit only haircolor (aka semi or demi).
Everytime someone pulls permanent haircolor thru previously colored hair they are weakening the disulfide bonds of the hair by reforming some of them into a cystiene bond which is weaker than a disulfide bond therefor the hair looses approximately 3%-5% of the hair's overall strength when more permanent color is applied to previously colored hair.

Thanks Susan W & Claude for your responses. It's funny how a colorist who proudly displays her ABCH certificate (American Board Certified Haircolorist) could be something so potentially damaging. I've been going to her for quite a while, but, always had my reservations about using the 30v mixture on the mid-shaft and ends. Don't get me wrong, my hair color is something I'm very happy with. A few patrons of the salon have gone red after seeing my color. Nonetheless, I am concerned about this practice... My hair is tailbone length, and in relatively good condition, so, I don't want to compromise that by continuing to let her put the 30v on the ends. Incidentally, I aksed her about this myself before presenting the question to the board, and she said that my the my hair is in good enough condition to withstand the 30v on the ends, due to the fact that I get regular protein and deep conditioning treatments. She also mentioned that there's no reason to be charged an additional $45 dollars (which she said would be the cost to mix enough Shades EQ (demi) on my ends). She claims that on healthy hair, the 30 mixture is just fine. Any thoughts to her rationale?

Ummm well the longer your hair the older the actual hair. The more it's exposed to blow drying, heat and exposure to the elements and sun....the more damaged it can naturally be. Just because someone's hair is in good condition is no reason to use 30 Vol on the midshafts to ends. Honestly what I think is that your stylist is a booth renter...probably buys her own color and it's cheaper for her to use 30 Vol with color than using Shades EQ on your midshafts to ends. As for charging you an extra $45 that's absurd!
 The whole point in using Shades EQ to refresh mid-shafts to ends is to freshen up the color with as little risk as possible to the overall health of the hair. It just makes no sense to me.

Thanks again, Claude. My colorist is not a booth renter, but, she sure acts like one! As for the $45 for Shades EQ, that's New York City prices for ya!
