hey everyone.
well i ordered a pack of 20 and 18in platnium blond hair. i am having it installed on thursday, by my hairstylist.. i have not gotten up the nerve to try to do it myself.
for the past few months i have had the keratin bonds in (not prebonded) so she cuts the hair from the weft, and then bonds it herself. this is the only method i have ever tried. i love that way they have come out, my only problem is that they shed SOOO much!!! so they never stay the same thinkness as when they are installed, and i loose a lot of hair.
i like to have the install really thick. so i dont know how i should have her install it... she suggested the metal things (i cant remember what the are called). i dont want to do clips, i want to do something thats lasts and that i dont take out everyday., but that will also prevent the shedding and will hold alot of hair.
if anyone had any advice or suggestions i would greatly appreciate it. i want to do it right this time!
thanks!!!

Hi honey, the silicone lined microrings are really nice, they have the silicone liing inside to help prevent any damage to hair from the metal rings. Some people have had damage from metal rings, other people wear them with no problems

Id suggest you pre-tip the strands yourself, then get them installed with microlinks or protubes (i think these are the metal things the hairstylist is talking about).
Pre-tipping is a pain in the bum but at least then you will get to choose how thick you want each strand, and if done properly (with LG and nail glue) they will shed minimally. Just remember though that the thicker the strand of extension hair, the more of your hair will be needed to attach it to and the larger the microlink will have to be.
Thicker strands = larger links therefore more visible bonds.
If you go into the hair extensions beginner guide you will see a tutorial for pretipping, the nail glue is what stops the shedding.
Microlinks and protubes both have their pros and cons. Some people like the silicone lined microlinks as they are kind to the hair, others prefer the protubes which are just a tube of metal-apparently they hold abit better but can damage the hair if not installed properly.
You should be able to find more about pretipping and the microlinks by doing a search =)
Hope this helps!

also when she did my extensions before who pretipped them by bonding them together with the keritin glue, then attaching it tomy hair.. i guess thats not pre-tipping?

I did a complete install (over 200 strands) using a 50/50 combination of Aleene's Quick Dry Tacky Glue (found at most craft/sewing stores) and Proclaim Super Bond Latex Glue (Sally's Beauty Supply). Squirt a half dollar size amount on a slick magazine sheet, spread on the strand end with a popsicle stick, saturating well, and lay over the table. Do about 20 and then roll into tips beginning with the first strand you made. It was literally one of the best no-shed installs I'd ever done and there was zero transfer of glue onto the hair. I gave up Liquid Gold tipping after that one.

I am having the same shedding problem with Fusion. My stylist always pre-tips for me and I really don't have the time to do something like that myself. Any suggestions?
I just had a full head install last Thursday and today, after only 1 wash, am shedding like crazy. I'm 90% air drying the hair, trying not to brush a ton and have invested in Frederick Fekkai clarifying shampoo (apple vinegar). I have the right brush (looper and boar bristle) and am careful to use detangler. The bonds are fairly hard right now to the touch but I'd bet this morning alone I lost 200 hairs. My hair is medium to fine and blonde so should I consider switching to hairlocs or micro rings? I'm considering calling my stylist tomorrow to see if there is something really wrong.
I live in Michigan so it's not like the climate is too hot that the bonds are completely melting.

Just my own opinion, but I get the most volume and the easiest install by installing with wefts and LG. I LOVE this method.
There is always going to be shedding with any method, but I find the shedding to be very minimal with this method.
This method is also the most discreet in my thin natural hair.
Let us know how it all turns out for you!

thanks guys for the replies.
hemlock.. thats exactly what happens to me. but the weird thing is that for my first ever install by my hair stylist, she did a dark blond (almost brown) under and then platnium on top.. only the platnium sheds! i think its because the blond has been processed so many times.
i am going to call my stylist today.. she has been wearing the micro rings with platnium for a week, to see if they shed.. and if they would work with me, so i will let u know what she says. i might try the pre-tipping method like amm suggested. thanks!!
pink.. thats sounds great.. but how long does it last? and can u tell ur wearing a weft..?
thanks again everyone!

Honey,
In my opinion, the wefts work much better for me. Every person has their own opinion as to what they can and cannot wear.
I did strand by strand methods before the weft and didn't have much success with them. My natural hair is very thin and fine and I could not get a whole lot of them in without them poking through and becoming obvious. I also had a lot more shedding with the strand by strand method.
The wefts I have in now blend perfectly with my hair and are unnoticable. There is minimal shedding with them and I can get a ton of volume with them. Another perk to them with me is that I can place them higher up on my head then I could any of the other methods. I install mine with LG which I love. I removed it with Amm's residue remover and they slide out and come off clean. The only downfall to them is sometimes the ends peel up. It's easy to fix though, just apply a little more LG to the loose part and the problem is fixed!
They can last in your hair a pretty long time. I have to take mine down after a few weeks and reinstall b/c they can start to slide down and become loose, but that could be due to the torture I put my hair through. Curling, Straightening, you get it!
Good luck with whatever you decide on!

I've had the fusion done the same way you did from two different
stylists. They cut the hair from the weft and bonded it to my hair.
Both times they shed completly out. I had bonds with only my hair in
it. I couldn't believe all the shedding. This is the *ONLY* method that
I've seen or heard of this type of shedding unless you have a weft that
sheds, which it shouldn't. I called both stylists to ask why it was
shedding so much. They both said they never heard of that. Now that I know better, it was a bunch of crap!
If you really want fusion, get the pre-tipped hair in the nail shape.
That doesn't shed but the bonds slid out after two weeks. It's too high
maintainence IMO.
If you want thick hair, go for the wefts. If you don't want to
wear clip-ins, get the Liquid Gold or Protac. I would try protac first
as LG boogers up after a few weeks.

The advice is really helpful. Honey, I'd be really curious about the micro rings. Please do post a follow up!
I am not good at doing my own hair so professional install is the only way I can go. There are not any local salons where wefts are an option so I can only go -hairlocs, micro rings or fusion. I like the fusion because it hasn't damaged my own hair yet (knock on wood) but if it keeps shedding like this I am worried about making it until my 5 week fill. My first install may have been like this but I attributed the shedding to the fact that I was in Vegas for a week at 105 degrees. The current install seems to be like it is shedding more and I have been so careful since Thursday.
My current install is past shoulders 613 and 18/22 so maybe it is the blonde color.
Can I bring a bottle of nail glue in for my next fill with the Keratin pre-tips? Do stylists get upset? Can the product be added at that point? If so, what product is best (be specific so I can get what is right).
This board has been so helpful!!

Hi there, i would like to point out that not all fusion (or keratin) strand by strand glue is the same, there are loads of diferent types out there, i have had experience with some that are crap and the one i use now is fab, no shedding at all! normally the problem lies with the temperature of the glue if its too cool then its too thick and wont saturate all the hairs enough to get a good connection, also the very light blonds can be over processed and will just brake off anyway (especially 613!) good luck with your install tho x

thanks again for all the replies. i am going to call my stylist tonight and ask her what she thinks about all these different ideas. i really dont know if i want to do wefts yet. i want something that lasts a little longer then a few weeks.
i am going to see if i can pre-tip some hair before hand and see if that helps at all.
hemlock brought up a good question.. can u bring in nail glue and then add it when u are having the install??
i love the way the bonding method works.. just the shedding!!

honey, the nail glue is used as a top coating over the tip to use with rings or shrinkies. It isnt going to be any benefit whatsoever to use with fusion.

Donutloose -
What type of keratin pre-tips do you recommend. I've had some good ones & just plain awful ones too. I can't do the pro-tac method.

What glue do you use that causes minimal shedding?

Hi Donutloose, thanks for the tip about using the right fusion glue, can you tell us the name? I've quit doing fusion all together for now, too messy, and doesn't hold well, I was using Monkey Barz. I made more money because my clients had to come back every few weeks for a touch up. I want to do the best work possible for my clients, even if it means a bit less money for me. I've switched most of my clients over to the braid and sew method with hand tied wefts. With any kind of actual hand tied weft there's virtually no shedding. I say that because I don't believe some of those tiny wefts are actually made by hand, they shed way too much to have been tied strand by strand made by humans. Please don't jump on me I said just a few, not all. I have one client who has been wearing the same blonde wefts for over 2 years. In my experience with fusion shedding I have found a lot of it has to do with the hair it's self. Some of the beautiful shiny hair has too much silicone coating, it's very hard to get the hair to stick with this coating. I never had much luck, even treating the tips with acetone first only helps a little. To get the bond to break down easily, and not as sticky the owner of Monkey Barz told me to use a hand sanitizer ( the kind that doesn't need water) along with plyers, and removing lotion. It does work pretty well like that. Soooo Donutloose tell us the kind you like, I like the strand by strand attachment, I'll try just about anything, if it will work.

I wouldn't mind doing the fusion but the pretipping is a pain. I can start on a few but after a minute I start loosing the notion, I guess if I really had to pretip I would.

Hey Mokipono, I've tried monky barz too and I had a lot of shedding.
That probably is one of the best glues out there...in fact I still have
some sticks and the glue gun if you're interested.
I found that anytime you pre-tip there will be shedding. The only time
I had no shedding with fusion was when I used his and her nail shaped
pre-tipped. There wasn't ANY shedding.
The problem I had with his and her hair was the pre-tipped hair slid
out after two weeks and I don't have oily hair. I was able to re-apply
them and they would hold and still no shedding but after a month the
hair was crap.

Hi Guys, well i dont pre tip myself i use bonding sticks from a company called jason paul here in the UK also Im currently testing another one from ace adhesives on ebay which is great so far been wearing them for 5 weeks now lost 4 whole bonds ( have been wearing helmets alot though and have in 22inch!) but shedding is minimal, be warned though the seller wendiandco (from ace adhesives) is a bit of a nutter and is capable of pretty abusive emails as my sister found out when trying to get shipped to australia but thats another story! not sure if she ships to the US but can only ask! trick with bonds is keep the glue hot (correct temp gun) and bonds small and always use silicone to mould, also you can use a purging tool to seal the top and bottom of the bond for extra security, i dont but i know some that do, i love strand by strand it give you loads of freedom to blend colours and do the bonds the size you want, i offer my clients an optional 6 week maintenance app and remove after 3 months to avoid damage, booked 2 months ahead so doing something right! Blimey sorry for the novel ladies!! I do go on!!

OK-this forum has prompted my own research and I think the shrink***s might be better than fusion. Just went to see a stylist today (she happens to post on this board on occasion and is in Troy, MI) and I'm convinced that this is a better way to go because of shedding issues. I'm only at week 2 with my install and lose hair constantly. From looking at the stylists hair (she had shrink**s) and watching her brush it, there is no question in my mind. Will keep you posted-my new install is 8/31. Honey? What did you end up deciding?

hey guys..
i ended up just doing what i always did.. the bonding with the keratin.. i told her to add ALOT of hair since it sheds so much. I had them done last thursday.. i think.
so far they are awesome very little shedding. i didnt wash my hair till yesterday.. so i let the bonds dry alot, and when i wsh my hair i only use conditioner on the bottom. also this time i am wearing them wavy a lot instead of ironing them all the time.
i will let u guys know what happens in another week or so.. if they shed.
thanks for all the advice.
