I was reading the review on LA Looks Gel and what is the difference between using Avedas Flax and Aloe gel (or any saloon gel) compared to cheap commercial gels?Of course Aveda's ingredients are better and hair doesn't dry out but it is so expensive. With commericial gels is a 50-50 situation.I've tried some good and bad (avoiding silicone of course!)I just wanted to know your opinion. Thanks!:)

Hi,
I personally do not do well with the LA Looks or other over-the-counter gels. That is why I asked short haired Jane Bullock to test it. Jane is a great hair product tester because her hair grows so fast she has to get it cut every 4 weeks or else it looks like she stuck her hair in a socket.
So if Jane damages her hair with a test she can just get it cut. I on the other hand have hair way below my waist and would cry if I harmed it. Believe me, I have had a few close calls with some of the product tests. Now I am more careful.
I personally believe that salon products are the ONLY way to go for some hair. Especially long hair. Unfortunately some people are on tight budgets and Aveda, while it is fabulous, can be a little high. People, especially teens, are looking for something that works that is less expensive. That is probably one of the biggest emails I get. They want to use the Aveda but their pocketbooks are LA Looks sized.
I agree that a lot of the supermarket gels can be very drying for hair. However, a lot of people who use the gels like LA Looks wear short spikey dos and have to have it cut on a regular basis. So the damage is passing.
For anyone who is trying to grow their hair longer or keep their longer locks in great shape I would never recommend any gels other than those from Aveda (I love the Confixer) or ARTec of Redken.
So I agree from that view.
Thanks for your post.
Best wishes, Karen Shelton

Hi Karen...do we get to see your 'way below waist' hair sometime? From previous pics, I'm sure it looks wonderful! Best wishes, Chris

Hi Chris,
Yes I need to do that sometime. Unfortunately time is what I have least of these days but I will make sure it is on my "to do" list. :-) Thanks for asking I am flattered.
Best wishes, Karen
