Calling all naturals!  I am transitioning and about 55% of my hair is natural, and I usually wear it straight, so that means blow drying and detangling.  On days that I decide to deep condition my natural hair becomes really coily and it's hard to detangle even with conditioner on it, and when I try I find I get little knots and holes.  How can I prevent this from happening?  How do you prep your hair for blow drying and detangling?

Hi PickledGeuse,

First I detangle...for my hair, I need more than conditioner. I usually used conditioner mixed with just a bit of oil ( usually a pea size to a dime size) to add slippage.  Also, I do my hair in sections and this is also what I did when I would stretch my relaxers for 6 months at a time.

I detangle while the water is running in my hair rinsing out the conditioner. Then I would braid up that section of hair that I detangled to keep it from tangling again. Usually I use for large braids.    When I am done washing... I put in a moisturizer/heat protectant and let my hair air dry a bit. Finally, I take down each braid ( since it is still damp, I comb through from ends to roots to make sure I get rid of any loose hairs) and then blow dry.  I have to use a wide tooth comb attachment... I was using a diffuser in one hand and a comb in another but my hair got too big.

I hope that helps...others might have a different way.

Wow 55% you go on ahead I am no where near where you are but I did notice that the hair was dry, strawlike, and hard to detangle when I blowdried. So I started airdrying then flat iron which has helped alot. I am following the C&G method of washing in sections http://www.growafrohairlong.com HTH

Thanks For Replying Girls!  Yeah.. 55%.. most of my hair is half way there, and I think it's due to me texturizing instead of relaxing when I did use chemicals, and besides..I have short hair!  So it won't be too long.  And I don't like the idea of air drying too much.  I had horrible experiences with that when I texturized and relaxed.. OOoooOO.  I totally think if I was to airdry with natural hair.. It would take all day to flat iron out the kinks..it'd be way too thick to get the comb through.  another question, should I detangling before blow drying .. section by section?

Also, would it be safe to use a little bit of conditioner to make the detangling process easier?

I have tried a product called Sofn'free N' Pretty Olive Oil Detangler and it works pretty good..eventhough it seems to aimed at  childrens hair. I too wanted to untangle the fierce mane on my head. I also love Parevu t-tREE CONDITIONER . It puts moisuture, encourages natural curl in the hair and it smells delectable.  I hope this helps peeps.

You would be in trouble if you didn't detangle your hair before blow drying...  Always detangle section by section.

the only part of my hair that is not natural are the very ends of my tips. The base and new growth right now are very thick i can barely get my fingers through it.
Transitioning is a confusing decision for me, today i told my mom to get me designers touch to relax, but im not sure if i will go through with it yet.
My concerns is how will i controll my hair? How will i style it ? please excuse all the questions but this very new for me.

Does anyone know of any websites or articles, books that would help me learn more about transitioning? I just took out my braids and i got a ball spots, so i wont be doing any buns, for a while. What do think of a weave with kinky staight hair?

If your hair is really tangled it could mean that you need a trim. A trim can have amazing effects on the detangling process. I like to use Neutrogena Triple Moisture leave in conditioner because it has a lot of slip. For stubborn spots I use a spot detangler like Herbal Essence

Thanks for the websites, they really helped!!!

also i co for 2-3 days and it really helps to manage my hair, it is softer. my last relaxer was in april and i had 2-3 inches of new growth. after my co,detangling and rosewater my new growth seem (kinky) straight as though it is relaxed hair.

Poka, i love your fotki your hair looks very healthy and i love even more when it is curly. can you apply shea butter to the hair as though it is a styling creme and leave it in?

Luvlybelizean, I know you didn't ask me but yes Shea butter can be used as a styling creme...make sure to be light handed with it. A little goes a long way and it can result with a greasey feeling.

Ok Poka go ahead and answer lol...sorry

Lol @ cmesweet

Luvlybelizean.....yes, I use shea butter as a moisturizer and like cmesweet said, be light handed because it is pretty heavy.  I use shea butter and castor oil on my ends a lot and they really help me from getting splits.  Thank you for the complement also.

Kenra MC.  Also to Cmesweet, what's an alternative to your method if you have short hair and acan't exactly do braids.  Would just putting them in ouchless hair tyes be an equivalent.  And I'm not sure if I want to put oil in my whole bottle of conditioner.  I haven't blow dried or flat ironed my hair since friday.. I've been doing them wash and go which looks a mess on transition-in-progress hair.  Detangling just hurts way too much with these coils.:(  Help!

Pickledguese...you don't have to put oil in your whole bottle.  Just put a small pea size in your hand and then however much conditioner in your hand and then put it in your hair.

Yes, you can use ouchless hair tyes.

What kind of wash-n-goes are you doing? Do you scrunch the hair while it's drying to crinkle it a bit?

I wash and I get out.. Throw moisturizer, oil, and garnier gel on the edges.  I try to pull it out with my fingers to make it fuller.  I try to do something with the ends but they are still matted and what not.  Its not possible for me to big chop because a lot of my strands are already transitioned, so I'd be cutting way too much of the natural locks.  It also seems as if I touch my hair for over 2 mins it just breaks off.  I'm also sick of that.  I think I'm going to blow dry and flat iron today and I'll loose a lot of hair but I'm frustrated, and tired of looking busted.

Definately detangle when wet/damp; Motions Moisture Plus Conditioner gives me great slip. To prep for blow drying I like to rollerset then blowdry and/or flat iron it makes it much easier to get straight hair and there's less heat involved.
