Hi! I just noticed that my permanent hair dye (which is black, just plain ordinary black, made by Boots which I believe is UK-only) contains p-Phenylenediamine which is toxic (damages the liver and kidneys, causes respiratory disorders and skin sores, NOT pleasant!) so obviously I'd rather not use anything that contains that stuff.
So, does anyone know of an easy-to-find black dye that Doesn't contain PPD?
It's known by heaps of names, so if anyone knows of a website that actually LISTS the ingrediants of certain dyes, I'd be most grateful for the link.
I'll reluctantly settle for deep red if black is the only colour involving PPD, but I have a horrible feeling it's used as a developer in all permanent dyes... Do demi- and semi- permanent dyes contain PPD?
I think my local chemist/drugstore would kill me if I insisted on looking at all the ingrediants of all their dyes, they're suspicious of everyone who walks through the door... Thanks for reading this!

Hi,
Great question. I have been searching for info myself on this. I have actually gotten email from 4 different people who had such a horrible allergic reaction to the p-Phenylenediamine that one actually had her eyes swell shut and she had to be rushed to the hospital for breathing problems.
Unforuntely many of the the "all natural" products contain similar if not the same ingredient. I have not been able to find a product that is really safe. So I am still looking.
I have been exchanging email with Paul Penders who is a famous cosmetologist and may know more. I will ask him if his products contain anything like the p-Phenylenediame.
Yes, nasty stuff. In fact, I just was researching the potential link between black hair dyes and cancer. The scientists believe that the damage is caused definitely to the bladder, kidney and ultimately liver.
Thanks for a great post.
Best wishes to you, Karen
