According to Claude's sticky on hair color, to tone you only need to use 10 volume developer. Does that mean that you have to use semi- or demi-permanent haircolor instead of permanent to tone? All the permanent haircolors seem to say use 20, 30, or 40 volume developer.

I've only used a toner once and I wasn't happy with the result. I don't think I'd be any help here.  -------------

Hmmm well I haven't read what I typed long ago but a quick word about toning here is probably warranted.....
Toning the hair is a common service in haircoloring used to remove brassiness or unwanted warmth from the haircolor which is usually due to lightening the haircolor. It depends on the color line when it comes to what to tone the hair with. It also depends on the results you are trying to achieve.
Many professional color lines like Goldwell allow you to tone the hair with 10 Volume however that is not a GOLDEN RULE! Redken doesn't allow you to tone with 10 Volume.
I'd recommend toning the hair with a semi or demipermanent color. For Goldwell use Colorance semi-permanent....or for Redken use Shades EQ their demi-permanent line.
The choice also depends on the hair's condition....if it's already overprocessed from a previous color service using a semi or demi to tone would be best.
I've never toned with 20, 30 or 40 volume and I don't recommend it.
