Hi everyone,
I have been reading all the different posts here and have a question as to why so many of you make your own extensions using wefts and glue as opposed to getting certified with one of these leading companies and going through them? I know it can be a bit more expensive but I must say that since I have been certified with one of these companies, and will be with another in October 2006, I have never had any problems with their hair. It has been the other companies claiming they have keratin bonds when in actuality they have maybe some keratin, just enough to claim it, and the rest is either wax,glue or who knows what! I am always shopping around for the best hair at the best price and it seems that these top three companies hair is always consistent whereas I never know what I might get with others since they are always changing hair suppliers and bond makers. I see that so many of you make your own, so I was just curious as to why this seems to be the case. Cheers!

most of these ladies are DIYers on this forum. So those options are not available.
And to be frank, even those brands of hair/pretips have differing opinions. You just dont see as many posts about them here because these people arent using them. What you see mostly here are people using brands and methods that ARE available to the DIYer

That's right! I had mine done a couple times by GL and frankly I felt cheated.
They overcharge for everything - from their course to their installations. As with everything one just needs to practice a lot... . I'm glad I found this board. I finally realized I can do this myself and save tons of money. With all due respect to the professionals of course! There are many great ones out there. But not everyone has the patience or know-how to do DIY, but prices could be much more reasonable I think... . The pic in my avatar is my first self-done install and I know I have a lot to learn still, but I'm proud of myself. I have lots more strands for much less $$ and I more compliments than I did with GL in.  ------------- I learn to love and try to understand everyone I meet. I see the rainbow hiding in their eyes.

Since I don't do hair extensions for my profession I don't find the
need to take a great lengths course. I also don't see the need to buy hair from them when I know the source for most of these companies and can buy it for less money. |

I for one am picky. If I were to take any fusion course it would be SoCap. There are no restrictions on what to charge or getting recertified because a new machine comes out. Hair extensions are expensive, but I also think they should be priced within reason for the stylist and client. I think you get more bees with honey than vinegar. I have learned more from this board than any course. As a matter of fact I took a course and learned four methods, out of the four I only do two. I can agree with you on the keratin, when manufacturers say the it's keratin it's really not. I have found that some of the keratin is to thick for me. I haven't found one yet, but like I said I am going to go get SOCAP certified.

Thank you Sherrie!! Your help and information were invaluable, I did come to find out that I have been purchasing counterfeit Bohyme and spoke with both Debbie and Rachel at the Bohyme company.
Darling Nikki, thanks for your input. I am always interested in getting other opinions on the major companies that do so much advertising and marketing. Cheers!! |

Shirilyn, I love So.Cap and as far as GL, they are basically a household name and they do soooo much advertising that it really pays ten-fold to just take their course and get linked to them. Of course, referrals are always the best but since I have much experience in marketing/advertising I know the value of being on a website that millions view. Consumers are much smarter these days, but they still read all of the cheesy magazines and see the GL advertisement in every one of them and go to their website. Good luck with So.Cap. they are really awesome! I will be taking Hairdreams course next. Working in Las Vegas keeps me on my educational toes!

I found that most girls on these girls on the board do WAY better work then most of the extension stylist ive seen, and thats QUITE a few i tell you, I think personal experiance and PRACTICE and Knowlagde makes you a good extensionist , not the "Brand".
There is also the stylist that posseses the gift to do great hair, and tell theyre clients to not leave it in longer than 3 months:) Them we love....But most "Great Lengths" techians i come across says 6 months and its the "Perfect" sollution for thin,fine haired people with damage hair....Dont think so....
I for my part would NEVER EVER step in to a salon that does Great Lengths, i rather go to a freelance extensionist. ------------- 12 Inch Wawa, Installed with Protac, i love hair extensions<3

| I second what Sherrie said. Most of the folks on this board are DIYers not licensed stylists. Those courses are not open to me, and even if they were, I would not take one. I'm with Malibu on that one. I'm not a stylist, taking an extension class would not benefit me one little bit. Maybe your question was JUST aimed at the professionals? |

Oopps, my mistake I thought the members were licensed cosmetologists. I guess a few are, but most not?? I for one prefer to be licensed and order from a name brand to fall back on, kind of like when you buy a car and it's covered under warranty. Just a preference, seeing as I have just recently run into a problem with a company that was at the Long Beach Hair Show that posed as a Boyhme hair company. After placing several orders I come to find that the hair is counterfeit Bohyme and their largest client, The Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas is not to happy with this newly found information.

xtensngirl. Yes this is a predominently DIY forum. Although there are some very experienced professionals here to.
Most of these girls here that do their own extensions have there own reasons. That doesnt mean they 'cant afford' GL or socap or Hairlocs. Some have used those methods and DONT like them. Nor do some professsionals.
There are many high quality alternatives to GL, SO Cap and Hair Locs, Hair dreams, and without the high price tag. What hair/method works for some people dont work for EVERYONE.
Whether someone is a pro- or not there opinion is just as much of value.
Some people will always go to a salon for services, others will always be kitchen beauticians. Its their hair, and there is NOTHING wrong with that.
Your posts seems very condesending towards those that are not a licensed professional. Like they are of no value. Well let me tell you something about me, since you obviously didnt realize when you came to me for advice, I am NOT a licensed professional. I am a VERY experienced DIYer. Ive done my own hair for years, have worn MANY methods, Ive reseached and learned probably more than some pro extensionists. So....yes I believe I do know what Im talking about when it comes to extensions. I dont know it all, but I have learned alot of valuable information over the years. I think you found my advice very valuable right?
So since I am not licensed does that now put me into the category of a 'waste of space' a 'knuckle head' a pea brain'
Also...you use Bohyme hair, I use Bohyme hair....its available to the DIY market also. Bohyme is high quality and is not exclusive to professionals.
