here is your answer- i will do this in two parts so here is part 1
What is Henna?
Three species of the Lawsonia plant are used as henna: Inermis, Alba and Spinoza; we know these three as red henna, neutral henna and black henna based on the characteristic color that each plant produces. These ornamental shrubs, six feet in height, are indigenous to Arabia, Persia, India, Egypt and Australia. They are also cultivated throughout North Africa, Pakistan and China. The deepest shades of red henna have traditionally come from Persia; however, premium grades in other shades often come from other countries. (For example, henna from Lebanon is lighter than henna from Persia.) A wide range of henna colors are necessary to create natural hair colors in deep, true shades.
The henna plant produces a small, fragrant flower which varies in color from white to red. However, when being used commercially, henna is harvested before the plant blooms. The leaves are gathered, the veins are removed and the remaining material is pulverized into a very fine greenish-colored powder. The main constituents of the henna plant are fats, resin, mannitopl, volatile oil, fixed oil, lawsone (a natural pigment) and hennatannic acid (a natural protein).

ok here is part two- btw this info was provided by http://www.thehennacompany.com - www.thehennacompany.com
How Henna Works On Hair from The Henna Company™
Henna coats each hair shaft with a natural, semi-permanent protein called hennatannic acid. Heat causes the hennatannic acid to cling to the proteins found in the hair (or nails and skin, if desired). Because henna coats and seals the hair shaft, it helps protect the hair from damaging effects of sun, salt, chlorine, wind and pollution in the environment. It can help minimize split ends and acts as "hair insurance" if you spend a lot of time in the sun, surf or wind. In addition to protecting the hair shaft, henna will tighten the hair cuticle and create a more solid surface which reflects light; the result is gleaming, lustrous hair.
Rather than producing dramatic color changes, henna enhances and deepens existing color. The darker your natural color, the less drastic the change will be in your natural color. Because color from henna is transparent or "see through," henna cannot lighten dark hair; it will, however, add highlights to dark hair and can darken the color of lighter hair. To determine which shade of henna is best for you based on your original color and the desired result, consult the Light Mountain color chart below.
Most hair coloring agents rely on harsh chemicals like hydrogen peroxide or ammonia to strip the hair and allow it to "take", or absorb, the chemical color applied to it. The word "natural" on a bottle of hair color doesn't necessarily mean chemical-free; some brands commonly found in natural products stores rely on peroxide to prepare the hair for their colorants.
What effect do these chemicals have on the hair?
First, they weaken and destroy the hair shaft over time. Additionally, many of the chemical hair colorants use various petroleum of coal tar-based ingredients derived from the environmentally harmful processing of oil or coal-tar processing ingredients that have been found, over time, to increase the long-term risk of various forms of cancer.
In contrast, henna has a long history as a safe, gentle hair color. The Food and Drug Administration has issued a monograph that approves henna for this use; henna is one of a select group of natural products to achieve official FDA recognition.
Using henna on gray hair has always been possible, but somewhat difficult. Henna has a harder time attaching to gray hair because of changes in the protein base of gray hair. After years of research, Light Mountain has developed a two-step product, Color the Gray! that effectively colors most gray hair.

I tried henna on several occasions. Well I actually tried Hennalucent, since it was pretty natural and sold for a dollar and some change at this BSS. Basically it was mixed results. Basically it highlighted my natural haircolor but it was pretty safe. It is pretty messy so hence why I haven't done it recently.

In most cases it does, unless you have very dark hair or hair is not porous enough.

You can obtain red highlights or red hair- but it will not turn a bright red to my knowledge.
You can also get henna that will give you whatever color you want from neutral( no color change) to strawberry blonde to red to lite brown to medium brown or dark brow even- if you want black you will have to add indigo to the henna mix.

it is a powder- you have to mix it with hot water and/or lemon juice, turmeric, red wine ,pectin, honey, oil, yogurt.
A basic recipe would be hot water and 2-3 tbs of henna. mix until you have a paste of yogurt consistency. Let it sit for 10 hours and then apply with a relaxer brush. Put on a thin plastic cap and leave on for 6 to 12 hours. Rinse then shampoo then condition and then deep condition w/heat.
Unless you order a specific color- most henna will turn your hair red or some variation of that. Neutral henna is available and will not change your hair color at all and Indigo when mixed with henna will darken or turn your hair a deeper red (burgundy or a dark shade with burgundy highlights). Hope this helps a little.

It depends on the henna brand. . . Naturally henna comes in a powder -- but in some Indian BSS or stores you can find henna creams that are a lot less messy.
I just decided to try the brand surya in red. So i'll let you know how it comes out.
Henna is also supposed tobe really good for conditioning hair as a treatment and help with growth by strengthning hair.

well today i tried henna. it wasn't really that messy, but it was a hassle i could live without. Especially after the results. my hair is very hard right now... .... i did a protein treat after and then i had to blow dry so i didn't sleep with wet hair.
I must have done something really wrong, cause that was not supposed to happen from the reviews i have read. and now my hair looks like it started shedding. Was the protein treat after too much.. ARRRGGGGHH

well i ordered it from a website that sells natural products. it came in a ziplock bag so i assume they buy in bulk then redistribute.
i noticed that after i had a hard time rinsing my hair, it had these little bits of sticks and stuff in it, which i didn't see when it was in the bag, or i couldn't tell due to my excitement.
And then yes i thought i read somewhere that if you didn't do a deep protein treatment that your hair would not be very nice and soft afterwards. so i did a protein treat with hoofmaker (mane&tail).
speak to me 'pickle' did i do myself in here????

I used henna a lot in high school because a mideastern friend of mine turned me onto it. It is a natural hair coloring product. It is sold in two colors, brown and red. I have used the brown one and I loved it. It's great if you just want some natural brown highligths. It doesnot dye your hair, rather it just highlights your hair. It is also a great hair deep conditioner. Whenever I used henna, it left my hair very soft and super shiny. It's great.

can henna be used on previously relaxed and colored hair?

This is a dangerous topic; dangerous because I absolutely love henna and I could hurt myself trying to type fast enough to tell everyone how much Anyway, Henna makes hair look a lot shinier and thicker. It seals the hair cuticle and makes it more elastic and less prone to breakage over time. Henna sometimes gets a bad name because it is known to give hair a reddish hue and many henna sites claim that it is incompatible with chemicals and straighteners. Well, I henna my hair once a month, and yes it does give your hair a faint reddish hue, but it's only noticeable in sunlight, and it looks completely natural. If you want to maintain the darkness of your hair I heard that rosemary helps keep hair darker. Anyway, I also relax my hair and the henna does not affect the relaxing process. That's probably because I make sure I wait at least a week after I've hennaed my hair to relax it. All in all, this is a really good product, and it's not expensive at all! I buy it from a middle eastern store not far from my house for 2 dollars a box. Make sure the Henna you use is body art quality. It's the purest form.

Hi everyone. I live in the Middle East, so nearly everyone I know use Henna & for so many purposes. You can use it to have different degrees of colour on your hair. If you want red: mix it with red tea instead of watetr, if you want it brownish use it with camomile (did I spell it right?), if you want it golden or yellowish mix it with Kurkum(do uo know that- you might find it in Indian shops- they use it for cokking its yellow powder).
If you use it alone with water, it will dry your hair, so always try to add oil (olive oil is good or coconut), I add sometimes one egg, sometimes honey, and other times yugurt. but always add oil plus. When you wash it, start with a conditioner to make it slip and go out easily, then shampoo once, and conditioner again.
Some girls (me to) use with some gylesrine mix it with water and leave it for a while and use it before bath. apply to your body, rubb it to go out (you may add olive oil instead of gylisrine), take a shower and check your even color and nice shinny body. (I must say it is a bit messy, so take care when you do this) I do it once or twice a month.
I hope this will add some information to you.
