tell him to soak up everything he learns.
and dont get into the drama at school, stay away from the kids who are just there to get credits to graduate.
learn how to be a great stylist, not a good stylist, customer service, is everything.
side note: most things u learn in beauty school is to get you to graduate the rest is learned in a salon. if there are any salons in your area that he could go to when he is not in school, have him ask then if they would be willing to have him observe and maybe help out by sweeping or something, this way he can WATCH the stylist work and he can get a feel for the salon atmosphere. i had a gal do that with us and after her year of school and hanging out with us, we hired her, she is a awesome stylist and she did commission with us for a year, after that she is a booth renter with a full clientle.
watching, observing and soaking it all in is the key.

Tangles, that advice about spending time in a salon through one's education and licensing process is so smart! My favorite stylist for many years started out this way at a salon I frequented. First, she helped out and watched, then she was my stylist's shampoo girl for awhile, and finally, after she was licensed, she continued as her assistant, filling in when the stylist was on vacation. She was so brilliant with color and cut that many people, myself included, eventually switched from the other stylist to her. For the rest of her years in So. Cal. (she's out of state now) she was in high demand.
