I was interested in going to cosmetology school ( I love doing hair, make up ect.)

However I went to a school here in miami and tha total cost was 12,800!

Is that reasonable? I dont know I thought it was very expensive!

For most stylists just starting out, you usually don't make tons of money. But as you build a steady clientele, over time you will start to make very good money if you are in  a comission or rental situation.

 

I know many stylists who easily make  at least $50K per year and usually even more than that, but it takes time and hard work.

my stylist at my salon are either booth rent or comission-

most beginning stylist right out of school start at comission, owners pay for advertising and feed them all new clients, presently i have two comission stylist who are averaging about $300-400 per week,

i have 14 booth rent stylists, their income depends on what they do and how much they work- we average somewhere from $1200-3,000 per week. again depending on how much work you do, speciality, reputation etc- i own a high end upscale salon and we all do very well.

do your reseach for salons in your area, go talk to the stylists and owners, get a feel for what you want and what you think would work best for you, if you find a salon that you really love, keep in contact with owners and even see if you can go there on days off and observe and purhaps with your dedication to school and watching there, you could land yourself a spot there when you graduate- some states also have what is called internship- you take a few hrs out of school and assist at salon for hours - i did that back in the day and i loved it, it also gave me a feel for salon and what i wanted etc.

In terms of how much you make that depends on alot of factors. In my personal opinion the top three are your people skills, your overall skills (cutting chemicals extensions) and your ability to maintain and gain a large clientle.

 

You interact w/ people on a daily basis who are paying you to perform a service for them so you should have good listening and communication skills in order to give them what they want so they are satisfied. It doesn't hurt if you're a people person those people tend to make the most. You have to realize education doesn't stop after you leave school. You should go to trade shows and classes to improve your skills and or learn new techniques. Being able to perform a great service is just as important as being able to have repeat clients. Those are the people that sustain you when business is slow and those people are the ones that give you new business by word of mouth, so you get free advertising.

 

It depends on your skills how much you make coming out. I had a girl in my class that did hair as a side thing but wanted to do it as a career. So she basically went to school to get her liscense so she could work in one and also have access to professional training and products. She had clientle waiting after she finished b/c she'd doing it before and it was something she was really passionate about.

 

If you're not passionate about it and not willing to continually learn (including traveling around the country maybe even the world to learn) then its not for you. If you're looking to make a quick but its not for you.
