My parents are giving out to me for dying my hair bright red because they claim that bleach/dye can affect your hair in the long term; i.e. somehow cumatively damage your roots even if your hair is not badly damaged.

This goes against everything I know about hair chemistry yet they still insist it, basically playing the age card on me, saying they have "Experience" and know people who wish they'd never had dyed their hair when they're younger.

I would like to be linked to an article or some kind that assures that bleach/dye does not affect the root in such a serious manner except in very rare cases. I know that it's theoretically possible but cannot see how it would happen in any practical scenario - even if the bleach did damage the follicle, leaving a month or so between touch ups would give it ample time to be repaired.

Not true.  The only thing I have noticed to "change" your hair type (i.e. go from straight to curly, or smooth to frizzy) from the roots, are hormones and chemo/radiation.

Damaging your ends is another story.  Anything and everything seems  to damage mine.

Out of curiosity- what are you using on your hair?
