I was going to write this up into an article but I will post it here first.
Please let me say that although I am going to explain to the best of my ability what Kanekalon is, I am not endorsing it nor am I warning against it.
I think that when anyone gets hair extensions they need to work with a hair extension expert who can guide their appropriate selection of extension material. Some people feel that real human hair is the only way to go for hair extensions. Some believe that "plastic" or manufactured hair like Kanekalon is just fine. There are pros and cons to both sides of the hair extension fence. A lot of these pros and cons are covered in several of the hair extension articles that appear at HairBoutique.com. Check out the various articles and then do your own research, talk to your hair extension expert and then make your own decision about what is right for your own hair extensions.
So now...what is Kanekalon?
Kanekalon is manufactured by Kanegafuchi Chemical Industry Company (KANEKA) of Japan and is considered to be the world`s largest manufactuer of "modacrylic fiber".
Many different industries use Kanekalon, but one of the most popular uses of the Kanekalon products is in the hair industry. Kanekalon is thought to be used in approximately 75-85% of all the world`s wigs and hairpieces. It is also widely used for hair extensions.
Although some don`t agree, many stylists and hair extension experts feel that the Kanekalon modacrylic fibers are superior to actual human hair. Again, not everyone agrees with this opinion. However many hair industry members love the Kanekalon product.
Kanekalon was introduced 30 years ago. Kenekalon was formulated to be "polydenier" fiber. Human hair is also polydenier. Of all of the synthetic filaments used today to produce the world`s array of wigs, hairpieces and extensions ONLY Kanekalon produces polydenier fiber.
Before Kanekalon was invented all syntehtic hair was monodenier. Kanekalon changed that to be polydenier.
Kanekalon modacrylic is composed of a combination of two monomers: acrylonitrile and vinyl chloride which are brought together in a process called co-polymerization.
Co-polymerization produces a dry resin which is in turn dissolved into a liquid state. This solution is forced through a multihole metal disk called a spinnerette, then into a water bath where it coagulated to form continuous strands. The strands are dried, stretched and then become the fiber known as Kanekalon.
Is Kanekalon like real human hair? Caucasian hair has a thickness or "denier" of 30 to 60. Kanekalon has a range of 34 to 62 denier or thickness. In many ways Kanekalon is very similar to human hair as you can see.
Again, you need to work with a hair extension expert to know what would work best for your hair. Kanekalon can be dyed to achieve a very realistic color. In fact, Kanekalon fibers are put through a process called hackling which is a process used to achieve the same kind of intricate color shading that is careted by nature in our own human hair.
Hope that helps.
Let me know if you have more questions.
Best wishes, Karen
