My five year old grandson just moved in with me and his grandpa.  He is half african american with very african american hair.  I don't have the first idea how to care for his hair.  Grandpa washed it last night when he had his bath with some of our plain shampoo (Infusium 23 I think) and I don't think he put any conditioner on it, it dried in tight little uneven curls.  I picked it out with a wide tooth comb this morning on his first day of kindergarten but I had trouble trying to make it look even.  It felt very dry.  Grandpa says just get him a buzz cut.... but I'm thinking there has got to be something we should do for his hair.  Help!  I don't want my baby to look bad!

I really dont know what to say, so I'll just suggest the following... maybe someone else could suggest something better but here it goes...

1.) S-Curl activator spray: moisturizes and softens, founded at Sally's

2.) Bronner Bros. Oil Moisturizer with Castor Oil and Aloe: founded at Sally's

3.) A mixture of jojoba oil and aloe vera juice is a great light moisturizer: jojoba founded at local health food store (maybe) Wild Oats Grocery store if you have one in your area, and the aloe vera juice can be founded at GNC.

4.) Also use a more gentle shampoo w/o all the sulfates so it wont strip the hair so much.  Try some vegetable castile soap from GNC or Creme of Nature Shampoo from Sally's.

5.) If you could get a hold of some natural butters like Shea, Mango or Avocado that would be good too.  Use it over the aloe vera juice.

Of course don't use all these products in his hair at once, again these are only suggestions.

And remember never comb hair while dry, always wet with moisturizer first!

Hope That Helps Some!  Good Luck!

all merisit's suggestions are on the right track. Really the key is to condition and moisturize. After washing his hair, you should ALWAYS follow with a conditioner! After rinsing the conditoner you should apply a leave in. Then, to better define his curls, use some sort of styling product like a good gel or pomade

he is a boy take him to a black barber and get his hair cut , he might cry for a few visits, but he will get use to it. Try PhytoSpecific products the Intense or Vital line would be good for his hair , and straight olive oil works wonders P.M me I can help you. I am a black stylist of 20yrs and I have a son, who looks like a boy with a nice haircut.
