OK, it sounds worse than it really is, but here's the deal. I went to Sally's and bought Miss Clairol in a level 8 ash blonde with a blue base and did a strand test with a 20 vol developer. Currently I have about level 8 hair with level 6 roots growing in (a little grey, too). So the blonde stayed a nice blonde but the roots turned out orange/gold. Even with a blue-based color! I'm so confused. Did I not use the right devloper?

So today I went back and bought a level 7 ash with a blue/violet base (Wella color) to try a different approach. I wanted my hair a tad darker than what it currently is. I left it on for 30 minutes with a 20 vol developer again and now that strand is purple!! Yet the roots turned orange! I know it sounds like my porous length is catching the color and my roots aren't lifting enough. What can I do about this??

All I'm trying to do is blend my roots with my lenth and get a nice medium blonde. I was told to use blue-based colors to avoid brassiness and my roots are still turning gold. Am I not using the right developer? Someone please help. My roots are growing in and it looks bad and I really need to color!

This is why a strand test is important!

Jen ended up with "muddy purple" on the length of the strand because of the porosity. The color was left on the ends for the entire "root" processing time, which is far too long.

I'm very glad Jen's entire head of hair is not purple. Clap

I had read about "muddy ends," too, I don't know what I was thinking. I didn't know it would be so dark.

How much gray? 50%? Whenever there is gray hair in order to prevent it from going a gun-metal gray you need to add some warmth to the color....a tiny bit of gold.

You could have the wrong level of your original haircolor (To check your natural level it is done in the back crown area of the head. It's possible you didn't leave the solution on long enuff to lift it properly if it is 2 levels you are lifting....2 levels typically 20 volume for 30 minutes.

You can't put color over previously colored hair and lighten it....it will only go darker. If you leave a blue/violet base on pourus blonde hair too long it will pull a violet tint to it.....timing is important. Now the only thing you can do to try and remove that is a bleach soap cap (Bleach, developer + shampoo together in the hair for several minutes....DON'T ATTEMPT THIS YOURSELF)

You officially have a color disaster on your hands. You need to goto a Master Colorist who specializes in corrective color. It will cost you big bucks $200 possibly more however continuing to do it yourself will only further damage your hair. Remember damage CANNOT be repaired. It can only be managed with conditioners until the hair can be cut off. Many times the damage can be so severe breakage can and will occur many times at or near the scalp resulting in bald patches.

My suggestion as to what they will do is color condition strip your whole head....this will bring your hair to a ronald mcdonald orange and then they will tone it to a natural brown.....after that highlights or lighter pieces can be put in at a later date.

Aftercare is very important.....moisturizing shampoo for color treated hair and deep conitioning treatments for several weeks after to restore moisture and tensile strength in the hairstrand to improve elasticity and make the hair healthier. Afterward if the hair is vastly improved goto a professional salon....NO NOT FANTASTIC SAMS OR SUPERCUTS...I wouldn't take my dog there for gr00ming. And have the highlights professionally done.

I think you mis-read Jen's post. She doesn't have a color disaster on her hands yet. She's talking about a STRAND test. She doesn't need to color condition strip her whole head.
I'll try to bring you up to date and summarize her prior posts, etc.
Her roots are growing in darker than the previously, salon-lightened length. She originally talked about lightening the roots to match the length.
Now she wants to lighten the roots... almost, but not quite as light as the length. Then pull a little color through at the end to match up and darken the length just a tad.
She's currently doing strand tests to get the shade right - but is having trouble getting enough orange/gold out of the roots. The level 8 did nothing to the length, so she thought to try a level 7. She didn't pull through at the end though - she left it on the length for the whole processing time. Thus she learned a lesson about purple! ;)
