OK, it sounds worse than it really is, but here's the deal. I went to Sally's and bought Miss Clairol in a level 8 ash blonde with a blue base and did a strand test with a 20 vol developer. Currently I have about level 8 hair with level 6 roots growing in (a little grey, too). So the blonde stayed a nice blonde but the roots turned out orange/gold. Even with a blue-based color! I'm so confused. Did I not use the right devloper?
So today I went back and bought a level 7 ash with a blue/violet base (Wella color) to try a different approach. I wanted my hair a tad darker than what it currently is. I left it on for 30 minutes with a 20 vol developer again and now that strand is purple!! Yet the roots turned orange! I know it sounds like my porous length is catching the color and my roots aren't lifting enough. What can I do about this??
All I'm trying to do is blend my roots with my lenth and get a nice medium blonde. I was told to use blue-based colors to avoid brassiness and my roots are still turning gold. Am I not using the right developer? Someone please help. My roots are growing in and it looks bad and I really need to color!

Since you are wanting your roots lighter, and your hair darker, it is complicated. You
really may want to consider letting a pro handle it. I will explain: That's why I sort of dislike blue bases. Its harder to find green bases on blonde shades these days, but those went orange a lot less than the blue does. Blue bases won't get rid of brassiness when you are going blonde. They will help counteract the orange that comes out in the hair (though not as well as green would), but the hair will indeed wind up gold, and need something else (violet base) to make it less brassy/yellow. I'm not a pro but I have this same problem using blue based dye to do my roots for my blonde highlights....and the next time I go shopping for blonde dye, I'm looking harder for a green based one! If your hair is that much darker than the color you are dying it to, root upkeep is always going to be a bit of a challenge. Not only to get it to match, but to make sure there are no bands in it of uneven color. You will have to be prepared to maybe have to mess with it more than once. It will be best to do your roots and get them lifted past the orange stage before doing anything to your length. You don't really want to use a blue base on already blonde hair, it won't do anything good. Only use violet for making it less yellow if you need anything at all...definitely don't use blue then blue/violet, that's a double punch and really too much. I'm so glad you test stranded before doing your whole head! So many people don't do it, but it really saves you a world of hurt! 
By using 20 volume developer on your roots, you are making them take a
lot longer, 30 will get past orange quicker, but you will have to test
strand and time it carefully.Now, about going darker, that is a whole different ballgame. If your hair is pretty white, its going to be a big challenge to do your whole head because your base color will always show through (very badly) and you may have to do it more than once to get it darker. Then it will wash out quickly too because your hair is very porous (even if its permanent). If you don't want to go much darker, and your hair is more yellow than white, use a violet base, test strand and get the timing right. 10 volume developer should be enough for that since you don't want to go lighter. ------------- Making metal barettes/concord clips hair safe, long hair style how to: http://alonghair.wordpress.com |

Hi, Susan. Thanks for your reply! Here's what ended up happening. First of all, I mixed the Wella color the wrong ratio which is why my hair ended up purple! LOL. I forgot Wella is 1:2. I ended up buying Clairol Brass Busters in a level 9 ash blonde and using a 30-vol developer. I did a strand test and could see the orange showing thru, but I knew there wasn't much else I could do without using bleach. I left it on for 45 minutes. The color turned out pretty nice, but a little lighter than what I wanted. I should've used 20 volume. I lightened to about a level 9 according to the Ion swatches at Sally's. I went over TWICE with a blue-based demi color, once in a level 9, then again in a level 8 to darken me just a bit. NOW it looks pretty nice, but the gold is still showing thru.
So green works better? Cuz I noticed Ion color in a level 8 is green-based. Maybe I should use that on my next touch-up? The staffer also told me to mix "unred" in my color. Someone else on this forum told me to try that, as well. Any experience with that?
So if you have any other suggestions it would be great. My all over color right now is about a level 8 and the tone is nice on my length, but my roots are still too gold. I'll live with it for the next 4 weeks until my next touch up!

I haven't tried unred. I did like green better because it seemed
to counter the orange more thoroughly and my hair came out a little
less brassy when it was finished. Sometimes greens can leave a
faint green tint when you go blonde (especially if they are overdone,
like if the green is used when the hair is past the orange stage) but
its really a very faint tint and does wash out after a week or so (so
green does have a bad side, but at least to me, thats not as bad as the
brassy yellow hair I get from the blue that I have to mess with
again). I'm glad it worked out, if you don't want to mess with the gold roots, you can try doing a roots only wash with a pigment shampoo like Complements which can be bought at Sally. (Not the color enhancing shampoos like you can get anywhere, but the pigment ones that look like paint in the bottle). I have the ash brown one and it counters yellow pretty well. That's what the violet one is for, but I haven't tried that and I'm afraid it may leave purple on the parts of your hair that aren't very yellow. You can wash your hair with your normal shampoo, rinse it out, then use the ash brown on your roots only. Then condition with your usual only from the ears down, not the roots. It won't turn your hair brown at all if you only use it once and wash it out with normal shampoo for each first wash, but it will help tone down the yellow very slightly so you might like it better. ------------- Making metal barettes/concord clips hair safe, long hair style how to: http://alonghair.wordpress.com |

I have the Clairol Shimmer Lights shampoo that looks like purple paint. It did nothing for my hair. I tried it like 5 times, even leaving it on for 5 minutes at a time. For some reason it didn't make a difference.
I think what I'll do next time is try the Ion color level 8 since it's got a green base and see how that turns out (after a strand test, of course!). I might even by the Unred and add some to the color if I need do.
