I'd like to go slightly darker - emphasis on slightly than the color I currently dye my hair which is medium ash brown.
I use Clairol Natural Instincts (semi permanent) and I'm wondering if i could buy a box of medium ash brown, mix the color and developing lotion, wait for it to darken, then also use a box of dark brown, mix the color and developing lotion, wait for it to darken then take those two mixtures and put them together.
Would this achieve the result I want or is it a horrible idea? (for whatever reason)

You CAN do that. I suggest mixing the two colors BEFORE putting in the developer. But as I always suggest......STRAND TEST! Just use a 1/4 tsp of each color and 1/2 teaspoon of the develper (they should be the same). That would make 1 tsp total. Apply it like you normally would to only about 1/2 inch section. Rinse it after the time you normally leave it on and dry it. Check your results and adjust the time accordingly. I mix colors of like formulations all the time. It's the only way I can achieve my desired result. Good luck! :) -------------

Mixing is fine, but do not wait for it to darken, mix the color first, then add the developer.
If your ends ar porous, you can add a clear to the formula before putting on the ends. That is why so many people get those dark ends, The formula must be diluted with a clear.
If you just run the color through the ends, it will not be on long enough to stay, and will wash out, and it will be discolored while it is there.
I always mix new color for the previously colored hair, adjusting it for what I need it to look like, and the porosity of the hair. ------------- Denise Kingsley |

Of course it would depend, but generally 1 will use 1/3 clear to 2/3 color.
You can alwaus start off half and half, and add later. It is always better to err on that side and have to put more color in, than try to take it out. ------------- Denise Kingsley |
