Cher, who used to be a regular here, had a similar problem. What she did was to get a special water purifier for her shower head to filter out the minerals. It made a huge difference for her. Before she got to the point of doing that I know that she used inexpensive distilled water to wash and rinse her hair. That also helped a lot. I know for me that when I travel on business I find that sometimes I have to rinse my hair with bottled water since my hair reacts badly to some cities. I would suspect that the reason the perm helps her hair is because it alters the cuticle and probably blocks the absorption of the minerals into her hair. I would also suspect that the solution turns red as a result of the iron mineral buildup on her hair.
If it were me, I would personally only wash my hair in distilled or bottled water and see if this made a difference. I am so happy to hear that she likes the EP. The classic shampoo is very good at removing gunk and minerals. Did she try that as a clarifier?
Hope that helps. There is also an article written by Cher here at HairBoutique.com about her battle with well water. I will see if I can find it in theindex and post it.
Best wishes, Karen
