i have naturally dark brown hair and want to color it back to it's original color. Right now it's highlighted with blond hair and it looks real good. I want to know if I buy dark brown if the highlights will take too much color and not be natural looking if i color it my self? Any suggestions?

I'm not sure they will take too much color or they may turn odd colors! Or worse,both! You may have to color them with red first and then put brown over top. I know it sounds crazy and everytime I tell someone this they freak out and say they hate red hair and dont want any in their hair at all. But the thing is,blonde hair (highlights or all over,whatever) usually has all the red stripped from it,and in order to go back to brown you have to add some back in first or it could turn green or greyish.
I would go to a pro if you have the money to do so,but if you want to try it yourself,just remember to add a red first as your filler color and then a brown.If you need adivice you could go to loreal's website but I personally prefer Clairol at http://www.clairol.com - www.clairol.com and they can give you advice and instruct you on to it without having a hair blooper. | NOoo,it wont turn pink as long as you dont pick a drastic intense red.something like a light red or light auburn.Maybe a reddish blonde even.Then color light brown on top. I love red too and red highlights but alot of people on this site dont want ANY in their hair at all. |

so to get it brown you would just color it with a strawberry blonde or a light reddish brown? Is that the red filler you talk about or is there something called red filler? Then go over it with the brown you desire. Thanks! ------------- Linda :) |

You have to do red first. I tried one that's light reddish brown,and it didnt have quite enough red in it to work properly.
So then I did it again...used a light auburn,just the color/toner and not the color developer for 20 minutes,then a light brown over top for another 20 minutes (with the color developer)
As you can see in my avatar it worked (except my hair has alot more red in it then it does in my avatar because I had just colored it and it has lightened up a little now~but to me actually looks better)
Yes there is something called a red filler,but if you are coloring red first you really dont need it cuz the red dye is your filler so to speak. You get red filler at a beauty supply store such as Sally's,I think they have one called red red.Yet,it is mostly used to color correct.

been thinking about adding some chunks of dark auburn over my light coppery brown for some depth??? I wonder if I can just mix some dark auburn and then use a 10 volume for more deposit? Or I might try my condtioner recipe with a 20 volume??? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. ------------- Linda :) |

I called Clairol like you suggested and they said to go with #108 Redish Blond and use the color without devloper, just like you said :-) and then #117 medium golden brown on top, again like you said :-). tshirtmom: I wouldn't worry too much.. I did exactly the same thing as you just last week. I have dark brown hair and I had blonde highlights (had these done a few times so some were blonder than others). I bought the Garnier 100% Colour in Dark Brown. Applied, left 30 mins.. and all the highlights had gone - My whole hair colour was now perfectly matched to the old dark brown! You couldn't even see where the highlights were! Hope this helps,

It worked!
My hair looks kinda redish brown which is fine by me :-). The medium brown did not come out quite as dark as I hoped that it would. My hair is very soft so I would use "Nice and Easy" again.

Did the Garnier damage your hair?
I have naturally med. brown hair and I went to light blonde. Recently I went to the salon and had lowlights and highlights done to try to get back to my natural color. It looked great for awhile, but now it is getting light again...washing out because it is so porous. I am looking for something OTC so to speak so that I don't have to spend another $150 at the salon. But I don't want to do any more damage to it......

| Well,Imacy2,that is a problem.I also somewhat exprienced a similar one about 3 months ago. So,I can give you some advice.... You will have more luck if at first you color your hair with a red just like I told Tshirtmom to do. Red is your "filler color" so to speak. Then you can use either a light brown or medium/dark brown,depending apon what your natural color is. Look,just do what tshirtmom did,go to http://www.clairol.com - www.clairol.com you will pick the consult with a color specialist option or chat with a color specialist. Of course this must be during normal hours or nothing will happen. They will guide you on to go darker with minimal damage and without having a hair blooper where your turns werid colors. Going darker is usually much less damaging then going lighter,so you dont have too much to worry about there.You could always go to Sally's beauty supply store though and get some protein filler (the brand is by colorful) and add about one-two ounces in with the dye to help keep damage at bay. | it faded and now the blond highlights are showing up again. I'm going to do the same formula as before. Clairol said to mix 1 oz shampoo, 1 oz 117 golden brown and 1 oz developer. they said the shampoo is used so it doesn't get too dark, but as i posted before it turned too light. what do you think will happen if i leave out the 1 oz shampoo? |

| Hmm...probably nothing. It will just seem darker at first. If it does seem too dark,just remember,it will fade and lighten,probably within a week. |

Since my color faded and the highlights came back I had to do the two-step process again to re-darken it and cover my highlights again. It worked better this time because I did not leave out the first crucial step. (The first time I used the #108 Redish Blond color without developer we had applied it to dry hair so my dry hair absorbed the color.) This time I wet my hair in the sink and towel dryed it before we applied the color and let it soak for 25 minutes. Then we blotted it with paper towels (the first time it was not wet enough to blot) and applied the #117 medium golden brown on top (1 oz color, 1 oz developer, & 1 oz shampoo) for 50 minutes and the color came out darker this time. It is a georgous dark warm brown. Any red highlights are faint. I agree wholeheartidly that Clairol consultants will not stear you wrong. |

Yes,they really helped me too tshirtmom. Funny this happend to you,because I gave myself highlights over the weekend. They turned out enirely too blonde,so I freaked and had to basicly do what you just did! LOL.... |

lol indeed. I just want to thank you again for your advice about the need to add red to cover the highlights before going brown. I'm suprised you went with highlights being that you know they are hard to get rid of |

| I had blonde highlights.I just put Golden Brown Natural Instincts in mine to turn it a pretty reddish color.I knew if I got a red color it would have turnd pink.Only cuz the blonde I had was very bright.I now use a wash out color for now. I knew this golden color would turn the actually reddish blonde I wanted.I get tired of the same color.I always change it.Plus,what's good about this is if I wanna go back blonde I can.By washing it alot & letting the blonde come back.I'm glad I didn't get a peramament color. |
