Question about hair extensions....

I`m wanting to grow my hair out long. I`ve been thinking of hair extensions, but I have layered hair. Is there any way that you can get a natural look with the layers?

Hi Meg,

I had extensions put in when my hair was layered....it was at most shoulder length, and was layered.

I had my stylist put in four rows of extensions, and when she was done I asked her to give an over all layer cut...not alot of layers, but enough to blend my hair, and we left it a little below my shoulders. Then each time I put in new hair we left it a couple of inches longer, and not as much layering.

I now have only two rows of extensions and it is to the middle of my back.

I am going in the middle of February to have my extensions re done, and I am going to use new hair that is now even a couple of inches longer.

I have been happy with the extensions. I now have them in not for the length so much, because my own hair has grown out, but I like them for the additional thickness it gives me because my own hair is fine.

You must take excellent cair of your hair though if this is going to work for you.

Hi Meg,

I have mine braided in, and have done so now for approx 3 years. I have not noticed any problem with breakage, and about every other time I go in to have them tightened my stylist goes over mine own hair and gives it a good trim to keep my own ends healthly.

I go in about every 6 to eight weeks to have them tightened, and along with the fact that I have a good sylist who does a really good job of braiding I think that if you went too long between the times that you have them thightened, that is when you could start having trouble with breakage because of the stress from weight of the brads which becasue your own hair is growing
our from your head the weight of the braids/extensions
could start to cause breakage....I don`t know, because I just don`t let mine go too long because I am afraid of that.

Another thing, just make sure you find a stylist that is experienced in the brading method....and use the best quality hair you can get. As for the cornrow method which I have done you want the wefts sewen part to be really tiny so that the brading will be very tiny, another thing that eliminates stress to your own hair.

I really think that my own hair is in the best condition it has been in for years just because I am not using chemicals, various stylig techneiques etc. that I did before I had extensions because I was always trying to add more volume to my hair.

Thank you so much Ellen for the great information. I`m just kind of toying with the idea right now. I have wanted them forever, but making that kind of commitment for me is kind of scary. I mean, they are expensive, and I will want my hair long one day, and then the next day I`m ready to go short. I`m very unpredictable:)
